2024 Puerto Rican municipal elections
The 2024 Puerto Rican municipal election was held on November 5, 2024, to elect the mayors of the 78 municipalities of Puerto Rico , concurrently with the election of the Governor , the Resident Commissioner , the Senate , the House of Representatives , a Status referendum and a Presidential straw poll .[ 1] The winners were elected to a four-year term from January 3, 2025, to January 3, 2029.

Previous PNP mayor Javier García Pérez was arrested on May 5, 2022, on accounts of conspiracy, bribery and extortion scheme.[ 4] The next day, he would renounce to his post effective May 16.[ 5] Later, on June 12, Karina Nieves Serrano won the special election to finish García Pérez's term.[ 6] She was challenged by former mayor Carlos Aponte Silva in the PNP primary,[ 7] but Nieves Serrano won the candidacy.[ 8]

Incumbent mayor José G. Rodríguez Rodríguez was accused on March 31, 2022, of embezzlement of public funds,[ 42] being suspended from his position the next day.[ 43] Jorge L. Ramos Ruiz became the interim mayor.[ 44] Later, on June 1, they found cause for arrest against Rodríguez Rodríguez.[ 45] There was supposed to be a preliminary hearing, but it kept being posponed,[ 46] [ 47] until August 15, 2023.[ 48] Later on November 3, it was determined that there was sufficient probable cause to go to trial.[ 49] Ramos Ruiz later won the PPD primary,[ 50] while Evelyn Vázquez Nieves won the PNP primary.[ 51]

Incumbent mayor Luis Irizarry Pabón was accused on November 1, 2023, of corruption , using his position for personal gains,[ 60] being suspended from his position the next day.[ 61] Nonetheless, Irizarry Pabón announced that he would run for reelection,[ 62] which the PPD allowed with the caveat that he would step down from the race if the result of the preliminary hearing proved there was sufficient probable cause.[ 63] Nonetheless, when February 28, 2024 came, Irizarry Pabón did no step down, stating that he was innocent, and the PPD threatened to take him to court.[ 64] [ 65] Later, on April 28, Irizarry Pabón officially stepped down, after it was determined that there was sufficient probable cause to go to trial.[ 66] After this, the PPD chose interim mayor Marlese Sifre Rodríguez as their candidate during their convention,[ 67] while the PNP chose Pablo Colón Santiago during the primaries.[ 68]

On February 8, 2023, incumbent mayor Luis Hernández Ortiz announced that he would be running for president of the =PPD .[ 91] On May 7, Hernández Ortiz and representative Jesús Ortiz González declared themselves the winner of the party presidential election.[ 92] After four days of recounting the ballots, it was confirmed that Hernández Ortiz had lost the election.[ 93] Later, on October 30, Hernández Ortiz announced that he would be running for a at-large seat in the senate .[ 94] Wilfredo Santos Colón, won the PPD primary,[ 95] while Danny A. Santiago Núñez won the PNP primary.[ 96]
