Premise

[edit]

On a distant planet, an astronaut wakes up to find the entire crew of her space station has been killed. Riya has no memory of herself or of the situation in which she finds herself, jogged by only quick, nightmarish flashes of her partners and their mission. Feeling paranoid, she must decide if she can trust the man, whom she supposedly knows, sent to rescue her after he received a distress signal from her location.[3][4][5] Brion claims enigmatically that they have a "purpose," and the computer keeps warning her about an unusual lifeform.[6]

Casting

[edit]

In August 2022, it was announced that Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tessa Thompson were cast in the film.[7] In March 2023, it was announced that Aaron Paul and Eiza González were cast to replace Gordon-Levitt and Thompson respectively.[3] In May 2023, it was announced that Uwais, Koale, Elliott and Flying Lotus were cast in the film and that production had begun in New Zealand.[8] In February 2024, Amazon Prime Video acquired international distribution rights to the film at the European Film Market for around $10 million.[9]

González said of Paul to Entertainment Weekly, "We have a lot of scenes together, and our dynamic is super intense and crucial in the film. Working with him was so special, he's so disciplined, and we had a great dynamic on set. We kept saying, 'Can you believe we're making a movie together?' And it's such a special movie." She praised director Flying Lotus: "We couldn't have been more lucky, because his visual imagery and the way that he spoke to us about the movie really translated to the making of the film."[5] She also said, "Even little details he gave us, like, 'I want such-and-such instrument predominantly throughout the movie,' gave us a completely different vibe, especially for me and Aaron... it really made a gigantic difference."[10]

Release

Ash is scheduled to be released in the United States on March 21, 2025.[11]

Reception

[edit]

Screen Rant reported in a February, 2025 review of the trailer that while Ash "feels like it could be a Dead Space adaptation, the sci-fi horror elements and claustrophobic atmosphere make it feel like an echo of the Alien franchise. The aliens that are briefly depicted in the trailer seem to be able to enter or infect human bodies, showing clear influence from the xenomorphs... There's no reason to think that there is an actual connection to the Alien franchise, but it's clear that Ash was influenced by it." The review also observes that the android in Alien played by Ian Holm was named Ash.[4] ¡Hola! magazine said the film is "colorful... boasting lots of trippy visuals, cool-looking science-fiction gadgets, and terrifying moments."[5]
