Balaban (Kurdish: Birêgiriya; Syriac: Bīrgurīya)[2][a] is a neighbourhood in the municipality and district of Nusaybin, Mardin Province in Turkey.[4] The village is populated by Kurds of the Mizizex tribe. It had a population of 347 in 2021.[1][5] The village is both Muslim and Yazidi.[6]
Etymology
[edit]The Syriac name of the village is derived from "biro" ("well" in Syriac).[7]
History
[edit]Bīrgurīya (today called Balaban) was historically inhabited by Syriac Orthodox Assyrians.[8] There were 300 Assyrians in 1914, according to the list presented to the Paris Peace Conference by the Assyro-Chaldean delegation.[9] Amidst the Sayfo, all of the Assyrians were murdered by Kurds from Kfar-Gawze.[7] In 1966, the population was 455, including 140 Turoyo-speaking Christians in 20 families.[2]
