Chheley Kaar! (transl. Whose Child!) is a 1954 Indian Bengali-language children's comedy film directed by Chitta Basu.[1] Produced by Charuchitra, the film is based on a story by Jyotirmoy Roy, who also wrote the screenplay of the film.[2][3] It stars Master Babua, alongside an ensemble cast of Bikash Roy, Arundhati Devi, Bhanu Bandopadhyay, Chhabi Biswas, Tulsi Chakraborty, Jahor Roy, Jiben Bose and Amar Mullick.
The film revolves around the efforts of a destitute boy to find his parents. It marks Basu's collaboration for the first time with Bikash Roy and second time with Bhanu Bandopadhyay.[3] Music of the film was composed by Kalipada Sen, with lyrics penned by Roy himself along with Sishir Mitra. Dhiren Dey handled its cinematography, while Kamal Ganguly edited the film.
Chheley Kaar theatrically released on 27 August 1954, opening to positive reviews. At the 2nd National Film Awards (1955), it won the award for Best Feature Film in Bengali, also receiving President's Silver Medal.[4] The film was remade in Hindi as Bandish (1955),[5] in Tamil as Yaar Paiyyan (1957) and in Malayalam as Bhagyamudra (1967).[6]
Plot
[edit]Tomato is an orphan who lives with his adoptive father. His father is very sick, suffering from a virulent disease, and will die within a few months. He instructed Tomato to take shelter with a rich person, Kunal Sen. Tomato approaches Kunal in a park and refers to him as father. Shocked, Kunal tries to escape from the unknown child Tomato, but cannot. After many obstacles and chaos, Kunal and his girlfriend Mili start loving Tomato.
