[edit]After the success of Oh My Kadavule in 2020, Silambarasan appreciated Ashwath Marimuthu for the success of the film. This led to reporters claiming that they would collaborate for the latter's directorial after.[3] Reports of a potential collaboration between the director and actor continued through January 2022.[4][5] AGS Entertainment were reported to fund the venture.[6] Touted to be romantic comedy, production was reportedly set to begin late that year.[7] Ritika Singh, who played the lead female in Oh My Kadavule, was reported to have been paired opposite Silambarasan, while Leon James would score the music.[citation needed] However, due to unspecified reasons, the project was shelved.[8] Silambarasan began working on STR 48, helmed by Desingh Periyasamy, and Ashwath began the working on the Telugu remake of Oh My Kadavule.[9]
In late December 2023, Pradeep Ranganathan, who has been a long-time friend of Ashwath Marimuthu, was reported to collaborate with the latter for his third acting film after Love Today (2022) and Love Insurance Corporation.[10] AGS Entertainment, would be funding the project, in their second collaboration with Pradeep after Love Today.[citation needed] The company made a public announcement on 10 April 2024, confirming the project, tentatively titled #PradeepAshwathCombo and #AGS26.[11] Ashwath and Pradeep retained most of the team from their previous films, including composer Leon James, editor Pradeep E. Ragav, and publicity designer Kabilan Chelliah; S. M. Venkat Manickam was appointed as the executive producer by the production house, while cinematographer Niketh Bommireddy was chosen to handle the cinematography.[12] Ashwath clarified the script he narrated to Silambarasan was not the same, after reports claimed it to be.[13] The film's official title, Dragon, was announced on 5 May.[citation needed]
