Dushan County (simplified Chinese: 独山县; traditional Chinese: 獨山縣; pinyin: Dúshān Xiàn; lit. 'independent mountain') is a county of 346,000 people (2007) in Guizhou province, China. It is under the administration of Qiannan Buyei and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, in the south of the province, bordering Guangxi to the south. The county seat is the town of Baiquan.
Dushan is located in a mountainous area, with elevations increasing from south to north. The primary river in the county is the Duliu River (都柳江), and the annual mean temperature is around 15 °C (59 °F) and there is total of 1,346 millimetres (52.99 in) of rainfall annually.[1] Transportation links include the Guizhou–Guangxi Railway (黔桂铁路), the G75 Lanzhou–Haikou Expressway, China National Highways 210 and 312. Important natural attractions are Duxiu Mountain (独秀峰), Shenxian Cave (神仙洞) and Yuqing Caves (于清洞), and Ziquan Lake (紫泉湖).
History
[edit]From 2016 to 2020, the county government spent 40 billion renminbi ($5.7 billion U.S. dollars) on construction projects. Amanda Lee of the South China Morning Post described these as "white elephant".[2] Guan Video created a 22-minute film titled How Dushan Burnt 40 Billion (Chinese: 独山县如何烧掉400亿; pinyin: Dúshānxiàn rúhé shāo diào 400 yì), released on July 12, 2020. The copy on Sina Weibo had more than 27 million views by July 16.[2]
