Enloe is an unincorporated community in Delta County, Texas, United States.[1] According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 113 in 2000.

History

[edit]

By 1888, the region had been populated, and locals had built a Baptist church. However, the town didn't get incorporated until 1897 when J. A. Enloe gave the land for the Texas-Midland Railroad to build a train stop. About 100 people were living in Enloe when Jerry P. High opened the town's first post office in that same year. The church was relocated closer to the railroad tracks as the community grew around it. Enloe kept expanding and had 273 residents by 1904. The Baptist congregation constructed a new chapel in 1912. The population was 400 in 1914. Residents had access to a phone exchange and may attend either the Methodist Episcopal or Baptist churches. There were two banks, a bakery, a telegraph office, two general stores, a café, an apothecary, and a seed store among the businesses. The town also housed the headquarters of the Carson Lumber Company. The main industry in the area was cotton shipping, which employed two gins and seven cotton buyers. The town had 450 residents in 1929. With 265 residents in 1936, the town included two factories, five shops, a post office, two churches, and roughly forty residences. However, after World War II got underway, more locals left to look for work. The population reached 186 by 1956. The community had only 150 residents by 1964. There were now two churches and seven enterprises, plus a newly opened hospital. Maps from 1970 indicated that a community center was available to the public. Enloe operated a factory, two churches, and three companies in 1984. 113 people were living there as of 1990 and 2000.[2] It went up to 125 in 2010.[3]

On June 2, 1954, a large, 1,000 yd-wide (910 m) F2 tornado killed one and injured eight in Enloe.[4] On January 10, 2020, an EF0 tornado struck Enloe. A couple of small outbuildings were destroyed with debris scattered a few hundred yards downwind in a subtle cyclonic pattern.[5]

Today, there are two museums in Enloe; the Patterson Museum and the Clara Foster Slough Museum.[6][7]

Geography

[edit]

Enloe is located at the intersection of Farm to Market Roads 2949 and 198, 3 mi (4.8 km) north of Cooper in north-central Delta County. It also borders a nearby stream, Brushy Creek, to the southwest.[2]

Education

[edit]

The Mount Hebron, or Hagged, school was swiftly incorporated by the Enloe school district after town officials acquired a school facility from neighboring Liberty. There was one school, two teachers, and 104 pupils listed in the 1897 records. The school was still in the town in 1936. In 1959, the majority of the surrounding schools were merged into the Enloe school system. The school has been merged into the Cooper Independent School District, according to maps from 1970.[2]
