Summary

Description
English: In V.D. Savarkar's book The Indian War of Independence (1909), this photo was misidentified as that of Rani Laxmibai taken in 1852 by German photographer Hoffman in Jhansi, India. According to the family historian Allen Copsey the subject of the photograph is either (1) Sultan Jahan Begum of Bhopal (1838-1901) who in 1872 was created a Grand commander of the Most Exalted Order of the Star of India; or (2) her daughter Sultan Jahan Begum of Bhopal (1858-1930) who in 1904 received the Grand Commander of the Indian Empire and in 1910 the Grand Commander of the Star of India. (See 1910 commemorative postcard). That she wears two collars of orders indicates that it is the former Begum, about 1878.
