DescriptionCast glass bowl showing the weld seam.JPG
English: A glass bowl made by the casting process. The line in the center of the piece is actually an indicator that a "breakaway mold" was used to make the piece. Extremely complex forms and intricate decoration can be achieved using this process. The mold is generally made of packed silica sand and other amendments set in a metal box that comes apart in halves after the casting has cooled. The later stages of production are spent removing the excess glass from the outer edge of the piece as well as the fill holes in the sand that allow the mold to be filled.
