Description
English: In this painting, Kleijn depicts the dramatic moment when Stadtholder Johan Willem Friso (1687–1711) crosses the Hollands Diep during his journey to The Hague. The prince’s carriage was placed on the ferry bound for the inn at Strijensas, while Friso and his chief steward, Wolf Diederik van Verschuer, boarded a smaller boat to be rowed across. At the last moment, it began to rain, and the prince decided to take the ferry instead, so he could take shelter in the carriage from the bad weather. This turned out to be a fatal decision, as the rowboat safely reached the shore, but the ferry was struck by a gust of wind just before landing, causing it to capsize. The prince clung to his companion, Onno Boldewijn du Tour, who was holding onto the carriage door, but both had to let go, and the prince drowned. His body was not found until a week later.
