Summary
| Description | English: Opening pages of the main text of the first volume of the manuscript version of the Lotus Sutra in Tangut script, with handwritten annotations and decipherment by Georges Morisse (d. 1910). This was one of a set of eight manuscript volumes of the Tangut translation of the Lotus Sūtra (Saddharma Puṇḍarīka Sūtra) written in gold ink that Morisse, Fernand Berteaux (d. 1928), and Paul Pelliot (1878–1945) had found in a heap of books and papers at the White Pagoda (白塔 Báitǎ) at Běihǎi Park in August 1900, following the relief of the siege of the Legation Quarter in Běijīng during the Boxer Rebellion. The preliminary decipherment of the first 305 characters of the Tangut text was published by Morisse in 1904. The Chinese characters next to the original Tangut characters were added by Morisse himself (and not by some unknown Chinese scholar as Nevsky mistakenly supposed): the circled Chinese characters are phonetic glosses, whereas the uncircled Chinese characters are semantic glosses. |
