La recherche archéologique nous révèle que la structure découverte correspondrait à une aula* carolingienne construite dans les années 900. Le bâtiment, alors en possession des vicomtes d'Angers, les Foulques, a été incendié vers 930-940, sans doute lors d'une guerre entre les comtes d'Anjou et les comtes de Blois. Suite à cet incendie, une surélévation des murs transforme l'édifice en donjon. Les portes sont murées et d'autres portes ouvertes à 5 mètre de hauteur. L'exemple exceptionnel de Doué montre que le passage de la simple habitation princière, la aula, au donjon rectangulaire défensif, a pu être une simple transformation "naturelle". Début XIe siècle, l'aula est enterrée sur une hauteur de 5 mètres et l'ensemble transformé en motte castrale sur laquelle on érigea une fortification en bois. Un fossé d'une quinzaine de mètres de large et profond d'environ 5 mètres fut creusé autour de la motte. La aula constituait alors une sorte de cave sous la motte. Le bâtiment est percé de deux portes, une sur la façade ouest et une plus petite sur la façade sud. Des cavités rectangulaires dansl'épaisseur des murs suggère que de grosses poutres pouvaient servir à barricader les portes. Le puits est contemporain de l'aula. Il traverse une ancienne carrière à sarcophages qui servit ensuite de dépendance souterraine au palais.
