Summary

Description
English: The marks used by the Reeves of Epping Forest to brand Commoner's cattle turned out to graze in the "forest. wastes". The marks demote the parishes entitled to this right, and consist of a letter surmounted by crown or a cross, the latter denoting a parish formerly controlled by a monastery. The marks are believed to date from the reign of King Edward II. (Fisher 1887, pp. 299-302)
