Description
English: Schema of the optic and trochlear chiasmas in relation to the vertebrate brain. The optic tracts originate in the retinas, chiasmate on the ventral midline of the brain, and end on the contralateral dorsal optic tectum of the midbrain. In many vertebrates a branch ends on the LGN of the thalamus. The troclear nerve originates from the motor centres in the ventral midbrain, chiasmate on the dorsal side of the midbrain and innervate the m. obl. sup. of the contralateral eye. By contrast, the olfactory tracts end on the ipsilateral cerebrum, without chiasma. n I: olfactory tract; n II: optic tract; n IV trochlear nerve; CBr: cerebrum; Th: thalamus; CBe cerebellum; m obl sup: musculus obliquus superior.
