Deutsch: Identifikation der Dargestellten ist umstritten
Français : Le tableau représente à priori une scène familiale à laquelle participent la mère, assise dans sa baignoire en bois de châtaigner. Elle porte un diadème et une perle sur le front. Au second plan dont un rideau recule la perspective, une nourrice aux traits grossiers allaite un nourrisson emmailloté. A l'arrière-plan, au fond de la chambre, s'active une servante qui porte un grand pot d'eau chaude pour le bain. L'analyse allégorique de maints détails (présence ironique de la licorne ; coupe de fruits, symbole de la gourmandise sensuelle avec la grappe de raisins, signe officiel du pouvoir temporel) suggère que la femme aux seins nus est Marie Stuart dont les écarts sentimentaux furent la risée de toute l'Europe. Le tableau est peut-être la commande d'un protestant voulant faire une satire politique de cette reine offrant sa nudité dépréciative et tenant à la main un œillet rouge (symbole de ses fiançailles multiples). Le tableau pourrait être une allégorie des trois vertus théologales : l'enfant serait l'espérance, la nourrice serait la foi nourricière et la femme nue la charité.
