St. MeinradsAbbey of the Benedictine Fathers in Spen-cer County, Indiana. There under Bishopde St. Palais he received his Holy Orders,the tonsure and minor orders on September18, 1865, sub deaconship on June 18, 1867,deaconship June 21, 1867, and priesthoodSeptember 22, 1868. Following that forthree years he was assistant at St. JosephsChurch at Terre Haute and also had chargeof neighboring missions. October 18, 1871,he became pastor of St. Elizabeths Churchat Cambridge City, where he remaineduntil August, 1874. Here he first dis-tinguished himself as an organizer andbuilder. He rehabilitated a practically dis-organized parish, started it toward renewedprosperity, and also built churches atKnightstown and Newcastle, which werealso under his charge. In the summer of 1874 Father Alerdingwas transferred to Indianapolis as procu-rator for the newly established St. JosephsSeminary, and was also pastor of the con-gregation that worshiped in the Seminarychapel. St. JosephsChurch of Indianapolis was dedicated July4, 1880, and he remained as its first andbeloved pastor until 1900. Father Alerding was consecrated Bishopof the Diocese of Fort Wayne November 30,1901, as the successor of the late lamentedBishop Rademacher. As administrativehead of this diocese he has carried forwardthe work of building and extension ofchurch causes, and both his work and per-sonal character have earned him a highplace among the Catholic dignitaries ofAmerica. Bishop Alerding is also well known asa writer, and much of the history of thechurch in Indiana has been recorded by hispen.
