1896 photograph depicts John w:Joseph Jessing, pioneer German-American Roman Catholic founder of the w:Pontifical College Josephinum wearing his monsignor's cassock, sash, and biretta, along with his military medals from his years of service in the strict Prussian army in which he was decorated for bravery in combat during an attack on a Danish fort. Pope Leo XIII named Father John Joseph Jessing a domestic prelate with the title monsignor in June 1896.
