Summary
[edit]Description | The Lunar Escape System (LESS) vehicle was designed to fold flat to fit in the side of the Lunar Module descent stage. Even if one astronaut was unable to assist (e.g. due to a medical emergency), in the low lunar gravity the other astronaut could assemble the LESS single-handed and fly both astronauts into orbit to rendezvous with the CSM. The protective cover seen at the lower left which would cover the LESS while stored in the LEM could be used as a sled to slide the LESS into a safe launching position prior to assembly. |
