Michael Luchkovich was born in Shamokin, Pennsylvania, and moved to Canada in 1907. He completed a B.A. at the University of Manitoba in 1916 and a teaching certificate from the Calgary Normal School a year later, and began teaching in Innisfree. Luchkovich ran as a UFA candidate and was elected to the Canadian House of Commons in the 1926 Canadian federal election in the riding of Vegreville, becoming the first Member of Parliament of Ukranian descent. He was re-elected in the 1930 federal election. He was a founding member of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation. Running as a CCF candidate in the 1935 election, he was narrowly defeated by Social Credit candidate William Hayhurst.
