Summary

Description
English: Or fretty gules, on a canton per pale ermine and the first a ship with three masts sable, arms of Neville, 12th century feudal barons of Ashby in Lincolnshire. The heiress Isabel de Neville (d.1248/54) married Robert FitzMaldred (d.1242/8) of Raby Castle, Staindrop, County Durham, and was the mother of Geoffrey "de Neville" (d.1242) of Raby, who adopted his mother's surname, but not her arms, retaining the arms of FitzMaldred (Gules, a saltire argent), i.e. "Neville modern". This image based on the depiction on the monument of Margaret Neville (d.1559), daughter of Ralph Neville, 4th Earl of Westmorland and wife of Henry Manners, 2nd Earl of Rutland (1526-1563) in the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Bottesford, Leicestershire.[1]
