Summary

[edit]
Media data and Non-free use rationale
Description Jazz musician Ralph Patt plays acoustic-electric (hollow-body) eight-string guitar using major-thirds tuning.

The guitar may be a Gibson ES-150 that was converted by Jimmy Vincent DiSerio in 1965 or 1966 for Ralph Patt, photo one on page 37, which has another photograph by luthier Saul Koll. Its headstock appears to be DiSerio's, and it definitely is not a Koll headstock. It has the rectangular fretboard favored by Patt.

Use in article (WP:NFCC#7) Ralph Patt
Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) for visual identification of the person in question, at the top of his/her biographical article and at the top of the article about his invention (and the cause of his notability), major-thirds tuning.
Not replaceable with
free media because
(WP:NFCC#1)
A search using Google and other free-image tools found no free images.

The death notice in a Yahoo jazz-guitar group was by a person no longer contactable through Yahoo. The Ralph Patt website no longer receives email (full mailbox).

I believe that this is a reasonable effort to find a photo.

Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) One picture of Patt would be used in the article.
Respect for
commercial opportunities
(WP:NFCC#2)
The subject pursued jazz as an avocation for the last 35 years of his life, writing and recording material pro bono publico, without commercial interests. Patt made his living as a geologist, having left a professional musical career c. 1975. There is negligible commercial value in the picture or in the associated works of Patt, because they are so widely available by design (and alas because of the limited commercial success of Patt as an artist).
Other information The subject of the photograph has been deceased since: 2010
