Summary

Description
English: Connie Barlow collected low-hanging cones from 3 Coast Redwood trees at Hawthorne Park, Medford Oregon, October 2019. Stored in a brown paper bag in a Seattle garage, by November 18 the scales had opening enough for these many seeds to be released when the bag was shaken. In nature, the cones do not fall from the tree until the following August or September, at which point virtually all seeds have dropped out or been disperse by the wind. The only exception is the propensity of squirrels to bite green cones off the branches in September or October, as the green covering is a valued food (though the seeds are too small to offer much nutrition).
