English: Arms of Woode (alias Atwood) of Harston in the parish of Brixton, Devon: Argent, on a mount in base proper an oak tree vert fructed or (Vivian, Lt.Col. J.L., (Ed.) The Visitations of the County of Devon: Comprising the Heralds' Visitations of 1531, 1564 & 1620, Exeter, 1895, p.801; Pole, Sir William (d.1635), Collections Towards a Description of the County of Devon, Sir John-William de la Pole (ed.), London, 1791, p.508). The male line expired on the death of John Wood (d.1743), whose daughter and heiress married a member of the Winter family (Encyclopædia of Heraldry, Or General Armory of England, Scotland and ... By Sir John Bernard Burke[1]). In 1822 the family was represented by John Wood Winter who resided at Lower Harston. The old mansion house of the Wood family, built during the reign of King Henry VII (1485-1509), burned down partially in an accidental fire at the beginning of the 18th century, and in 1822, the surviving part, the Hall and Chapel, being used as a farmhouse in 1822 (Lysons, Daniel & Lysons, Samuel, Magna Britannia, Vol.6, Devonshire, London, 1822, p.74)
