Racing career

[edit]

Early career

[edit]

Garrett is the first member of his family to pursue a career in racing. He started racing in street stock cars on dirt tracks in the early 1990's. He then drove trucks in the American Race Truck Series in his home state of Texas. He stopped racing in 2005 or 2006 due to lack of sponsorship and to spend more time with his children. In 2018, Garrett got back into racing as a sponsor of fellow Texan Bayley Currey when he debuted in NASCAR. In the winter of 2022, he competed in ARCA's offseason testing at Daytona International Speedway for Fast Track Racing after being encouraged to participate by Michael Harper, who drove for Fast Track in the test and in the race at Talladega in 2021 and who was also a T-shirt designer for Currey. This led to Garrett making his first start in the main ARCA Series in the race at Talladega that year driving for FTR as Harper had done the previous year.[1]

ARCA Menards Series

[edit]

Garrett made his ARCA Menards Series debut in 2022 for Fast Track Racing in the General Tire 200 at Talladega Superspeedway, where he would finish 22nd.[2] He would make two more starts that year for the team at Pocono Raceway and Kansas Speedway, getting a best finish of tenth at Kansas.

In 2023, it was announced that Garrett would start his own team in 2023, Veer Motorsports, and would run full-time in the main ARCA Series in the No. 66 Chevrolet. The team would have an alliance with Fast Track Racing.[3] In his first race of the year at Daytona International Speedway, Garrett was in the top-ten on the final lap of the race before being involved in a spin coming to the finish that would ultimately place him in 25th position.[4] He would go on to finish fifth in the final points standings after scoring five top-ten finishes with a best result of seventh at Salem Speedway.

Garrett revealed at the 2023 Awards Banquet that he and his team would likely only run part-time in 2024 after he said he "broke the bank" running full-time in 2023. They were scheduled to enter the races at Daytona, Talladega, Iowa, and potentially Bristol and other races if sponsorship can be found.[1][5] However, as of September 5, 2024, Garrett has not entered any races.
