Juan Pablo Colinas Ferreras (born 2 September 1978), known as Juan Pablo, is a Spanish former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper.

Club career

[edit]

Born in León, Castile and León, Juan Pablo began his professional career with his hometown club, Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa. In 2000, he moved to Deportivo Alavés. In his first season with the first team, he served as a backup to French goalkeeper Richard Dutruel (formerly of FC Barcelona). However, Juan Pablo was unable to secure a regular starting position, making only 15 league appearances over three years, the last two of which were spent in the Segunda División. His first La Liga match occurred on 22 September 2002, in a 1–0 away victory against Villarreal CF.[1]

Subsequently, Juan Pablo moved to CD Numancia, also in the second tier, where he was a regular starter over two seasons.[2] After a challenging season at CD Tenerife[3]– he began as a starter[4][5] but did not play in the final months – he returned to Soria, playing in all but one match during that season in the top flight, which ended in relegation.[2]

Juan Pablo terminated his contract with Numancia in June 2009 and signed a three-year deal with Sporting de Gijón.[6] He played every single minute in his first season, helping the Asturian team maintain their top-division status for another year (Iván Cuéllar, the previous starter, suffered another serious knee injury).[7]

On 10 July 2013, Juan Pablo signed a one-year contract with Maccabi Tel Aviv F.C. of the Israeli Premier League.[8] He made his debut for the club seven days later in a 2–0 away victory over Győri ETO FC in the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Champions League.[9]

Juan Pablo returned to Numancia for a third spell on 12 January 2016.[10] On 1 September, the 38-year-old announced his retirement from professional football.[11] However, he returned to action shortly after, going on to spend one and a half seasons with AEK Larnaca FC of the Cypriot First Division.[12]

In January 2023, Juan Pablo returned to Maccabi Tel Aviv as the goalkeeping coach.[13]
