Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan (Bengali: মুহাম্মদ ফাওজুল কবির খান) is a Bangladeshi economist and retired civil servant.[2] He has been serving as adviser for the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges, Ministry of Railways, and Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources of the interim government of Bangladesh since 16 August 2024.[3][4]
Early life and education
[edit]Khan was born in Harispur Union in the island of Sandwip, under Chittagong District of East Pakistan. He completed his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from University of Dhaka in 1976. He earned his Master of Arts in Economic Policy and Doctorate in Economics from Boston University in 1987 and 1989 respectively.[5][6]
Career
[edit]Khan joined the Bangladesh Civil Service in 1979. He was a faculty of the department of Economics at National University of Singapore from 1992 to 1995.[7] He was the first CEO of the Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) and served from 1998 to 2007. He served as Secretary of the Power Division of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources from 2007 to 2009 and retired from government service that year.[8]
United Group
[edit]He has held several positions within United Group and its subsidiaries. Most notably, he served as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of United Group's Power Division, a role he assumed on October 6, 2010.[9]
He has also served as an Independent Director and Chairman of the Audit Committee at United Power Generation & Distribution Company Ltd. (UPGDCL) since 2016.[10]
He is also a Professor of the School of Business & Economics at United International University.[6]
Advisor to the Interim government of Bangladesh
[edit]Khan is currently an advisor to the Interim government of Bangladesh by Muhammad Yunus. He is in charge of 3 ministries.[11]
Controversy
[edit]On 26 November 2024, Md Gias Uddin Joarder was appointed member- electricity by an office order from an adviser of Interim government Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan. There were allegations of corruption against Gias Uddin Joarder in Anti Corruption Commission. Anti Corruption Commission is doing enquiry of the corruption case of Md Gias Uddin Joarder, later Gias Uddin Joarder has resigned against the backdrop of Al Jazeera Investigates reports on his alleged involvement in corruption. Later another controversial person, Shahin Sarwar was appointed member- electricity by an office order from Fouzul Kabir Khan. As the Managing Director of DESCO, Shahin Sarwar was involved in forcefully power cut of the house of Begum Khaleda Zia, former prime minister of Bangladesh.
