Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport (IATA: TAO, ICAO: ZSQD) is an international airport serving the city of Qingdao in East China’s Shandong province. It received approval in December 2013, and replaced Qingdao Liuting International Airport as the city's main airport.[3] It is located in Jiaodong, Jiaozhou, 39 kilometres (24 mi) from the center of Qingdao.[2] The airport opened on 12 August 2021[1] and is currently the largest airport in Shandong, capable of handling 35 million passengers annually.[4]

History

[edit]

The groundbreaking ceremony of the new Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport was held in June 2015. Hoisting of the first steel ball in the terminal building occurred a year later in June 2016. The start of construction phase began in April 2017, and the start of testing phase began in October 2018. In September 2019, large-scale decoration and equipment installation began. In June 2020, the terminal building construction and civil aviation professional project passed completion acceptance.[5]

In January 2021, two aircraft successfully completed test flights.[6] Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport officially opened to the public on 12 August 2021, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.[1]

The airport has two Class 4F[clarification needed] runways, both 3,600 metres (11,800 ft) long. The runways are able to handle extremely large aircraft, such as the Airbus A380. It has a single 478,000 square metres (5,150,000 sq ft) terminal building. The terminal is designed in a starfish shape, with 5 airside concourses jutting out of it. The roof of the terminal is made out of 0.5 millimetres (0.020 in) thick stainless steel, and spans 223,000 square metres (2,400,000 sq ft).[2][7]
