Japan's Elimination

[edit]

Until the 27 September match between Japan and Canada, Japan must be considered as having been eliminated from quarterfinal consideration, but still eligible to finish #3 in Pool A and qualify for 2015. They can do so as follows:

  • Japan beats Canada by a LOT, gets a bonus point.
  • Tonga loses to France, also by a lot, does not get a bonus point.
  • The combined points difference in these two games is more than 92.
  • New Zealand beats Canada.
  • In Canada's losses to Japan and New Zealand, they earn a total of one bonus point.

If (and I admit it's a big if) these things all happen, Japan, Canada, and Tonga will finish tied with 5 points. When three teams are tied, the first tie-breaker is points difference. Japan would be the best of the three, thus qualifying for 2015. Now, of course that won't happen, but that is no reason to violate Wikipedia's Crystal Ball policy. My Dinner With Andre The Giant (talk) 01:50, 23 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed. If there exists at least one scenario where a team is not eliminated, then that team is not eliminated. Even if that scenario is very unlikely. 188.221.79.22 (talk) 11:28, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

New Zealand have won the group

[edit]

There is no combination of results which could prevent this. Even a bonus point win for France in their last game, coupled with a New Zealand loss would see them tied on 15 pts. If this were the case, the head-to-head result takes precedence over points difference. New Zealand defeated France.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.16.222.30 (talk) 15:11, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
