Arbitrary Rules On This Template
[edit]May I ask who made up the rule that all games must be updated at the same time? This was never customary in previous seasons, and it is not the custom on the other MLB templates like division and WC standings, which are updated as those games are finished. Maybe if there would be some consensus on WP:Baseball we can institute such a rule. Otherwise let Wikipedia work how it is supposed to. Jdavi333 (talk) 18:16, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
- @SeaCardinal and Xolkan: anything to say here? Jdavi333 (talk) 23:57, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Jdavi333: Apparently, there was a user called Sawol who added the "rule" to the template: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?diff=972870275&oldid=971502337&title=Template%3A2021_AL_Record_vs._opponents&type=revision. Hopefully this helps. SeaCardinal (talk) 11:22, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
- I also found this out: the template's National League counterpart was created by Vym29 on July 18, 2020, almost a month before Sawol added the fake rule to this template. Vym29 added the fake rule on that one when he created it. When Sawol edited the National League template, he noticed that "rule" that wasn't on the AL template, so he must have added it to the latter and overlooked something. Thanks, Jdavi333, for helping us on this. SeaCardinal (talk) 11:35, 9 April 2021 (UTC)

That’s all very nice, but it does not explain how this rule came into existence only this year. Before now no one ever had a problem with editors adding selected parts of pages just like they do all over Wikipedia. Jdavi333 (talk) 13:05, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
- Earlier, I messaged Vym29 why he decided to add that rule. Maybe he has an answer. SeaCardinal (talk) 13:14, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
When I created 2021 NL, I copy-pasted the 2020 NL, and this rule of updating everything at once was on that template (‘20 NL) at that time. Vym29 (talk) 18:03, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
Also, if the rule should not be written, let’s erase it ; though I think this is logical to wait until all games are completed, at least to avoid differences of revisions. Vym29 (talk) 18:09, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
So, I went and looked back at the last 5 seasons of both leagues and it looks like the rule was being used in the NL but it was never implemented in the AL. Xolkan (talk) 17:08, 10 April 2021 (UTC)
Apologies for my absence. I was on vacation for the weekend. Have we done anything to change this rule yet (I am aware of the three comments immediately above this one)? SeaCardinal (talk) 11:17, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
