CKWS viewed in Utica?

[edit]

It is unknown to me why CKWS would be listed as a "significantly viewed out-of-market station", when a look at this link would show that its signal would go no farther southeast than Turin – on a good day. --JB82c 20:15, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dunno. I'm walking-distance to the CKWS-TV studio, and not only do we not get anything directly from Utica over-the-air, at least one channel (WKTV 2) is replaced by some other barely-watchable co-channel station (CIII-2 Bancroft). Maybe StarChoice is "Capturing Kingston's Worst Signal" on full ConUS, but terrestrially it'd be a bit of a stretch. --66.102.80.212 (talk) 18:54, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Lest we forget cable television -- systems in that area (at least, Rome) carry CKWS on cable. -- azumanga (talk) 00:04, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Utica, however, would have a severe co-channel interference problem on channel 11. A similar situation exists in Ottawa-Hull, where CKWS-TV *used* to be on cable. This doesn't look promising; CKWS does run a few repeaters in places like Spencerville but they'd be too underpowered to be of much use to Utica. --66.102.80.212 (talk) 17:34, 12 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like the term "significantly viewed" has a specific legal meaning; there's an outdated list on fcc.gov which defines these stations, county-by-county, based on how many full-size outdoor TV antennas are already picking up the station terrestrially. It's not defined by cable carriage, by design. I'm not sure if CKWS is on that list for Utica-Rome - it'd be a stretch, especially with the co-channel station there. (CKWS is listed for Jefferson County but the CKWS towers are visible from there). --66.102.80.212 (talk) 20:46, 14 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
