Template:Works by Niccolò Machiavelli → Template:Niccolò Machiavelli – Per naming conventions for writer navigational templates. What makes this case slightly complicated is that there were two versions of the same template, {{Works by Niccolò Machiavelli}} and {{Niccolò Machiavelli}}, with essentially the same content. I chose to keep this one since it was created a few months earlier (July 2009 vs November 2009), although the other one had the better title. Ffranc (talk) 13:55, 10 October 2019 (UTC)
- I think WP:TFD might be a more appropriate venue for this. Also, I undid your bold change that turned Template:Niccolò Machiavelli into a redirect. The contents of the two templates seem to differ significantly. Whether/how to merge the two is the kind of question that WP:TFD specializes in. Colin M (talk) 15:14, 10 October 2019 (UTC)
- The only content difference is that one template includes some general topics that don't really belong there, per Wikipedia:Navigation template#Navigation templates provide navigation within Wikipedia. Otherwise it's just design differences. They are both navigation templates for the same author, so merging them shouldn't in itself be controversial. Ffranc (talk) 15:39, 10 October 2019 (UTC)
- Okay, I just noticed a number of features that the eponymous template had that the "works by..." one did not, like: wikisource/wikiquote links along the bottom, redlinks to works not having articles, thumbnail image. If you actually think none of these have any value, feel free to undo my revert. I just got the impression that the discarding of the eponymous template might have been done in haste. - I reverted the changes on the "Works of Niccolo Machiavelli" template, as it lists only his works, and the main template focuses on his works and other topics related to the main article. KingofGangsters (talk) 01:24, 11 October 2019 (UTC)
- I don't think they were created with that intention. The older template was created in July 2009 and the newer in November 2009. If you look at late 2009 versions of The Prince or Discourses on Livy, you can see that none had yet been added. Most likely, the user who created the second template didn't know that the first one existed. It's a simple mistake where two versions of the same template were created. In a case like this it's usually fine to just redirect. But maybe it was more complicated than I thought, and I should have gone through a separate deletion process. Ffranc (talk) 16:22, 11 October 2019 (UTC)
- I'd just redirect "Works by..." to the other template. Nothing needs to be moved. PC78 (talk) 17:33, 12 October 2019 (UTC)
- Yeah, I considered that. An obsessive sense of justice for the original creator just made me prioritize the older template. I'll make another attempt to redirect the newer template, update the older one, and see if any protest remains. Otherwise I'll take it to WP:TFD. Ffranc (talk) 07:45, 15 October 2019 (UTC)
