Your DYK comments

[edit]

Hi. I saw your comments at WP:ERRORS today. A lot of people invest a lot of (volunteer) time trying to make DYK as good as they can make it. They're not perfect, and neither is the final product. A comment like there does not appear to be much quality control in what is being put on the main page isn't helpful and is disrespectful of the work people have put into it. Like almost every part of this project, DYK could use more help, and your assistance would be eagerly accepted. We need more people to do initial reviews. We need more people to build the daily sets. You could comment on prepared sets while they're being worked on at WT:DYK, or just watch the top of the queue and provide feedback at WP:ERRORS#Next DYK and WP:ERRORS#Next-but-one DYK, any of which will get issues fixed before they hit the main page. But please don't just sit on the sidelines and take potshots at the people who are doing the work. RoySmith (talk) 18:23, 6 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate perhaps my comments could come across as disrespectful, but I know I am not the first to raise the possibility of a lack of quality control at DYK, and other aspects of the main page, and I felt it was worth mentioning alongside the specific issues I brought up. While I appreciate that DYK (as with the rest of Wikipedia) is done entirely by volunteers, the content is the first thing a lot of readers encounter and it is particularly important for main page content to be good quality in my opinion. I would like to get more involved in Wikipedia again and I certainly wouldn't mind helping out at DYK. Adam Black talkcontribs 19:05, 6 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps the best place to jump in would be to take a look at WT:DYK#Older nominations needing DYK reviewers and work on some of these. To allay your fears, don't worry about messing up on your first reviews; it's expected. Drop a note at WT:DYK saying you're a new reviewer and people will be eager to give you support and guidance. RoySmith (talk) 19:44, 6 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I have taken a good look through a number of the nominations, and also at approved DYK hooks and those recently featured on the main page, and will not be contributing. The vast majority is unencyclopedic and adds very little to the reader's experience (or, indeed, knowledge). I am now of the opinion DYK should be entirely scrapped and replaced with something more useful. Adam Black talkcontribs 17:32, 9 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Closure

[edit]

Hi, and thanks for closing my split proposal at Talk:Restrictions on TikTok in the United States#Potential split. I am simply letting you know that the last part of your closure statement is incorrect – "TikTok ban in the United States" is not a redirect to the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act article. Also, that article is about the law that banned TikTok rather than about the ban itself. I had been aware of it when making my original request, and I specifically mentioned it in the request as one of the two sources of the split; splitting an article into itself would not make sense.

Thanks! –Gluonz talk contribs 17:47, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

This is the first discussion I have closed and I picked it randomly from the list of closure requests. I was hoping I'd got it right but was expecting I may not have done it perfectly. I am not sure how I made that mistake but I have reworded my closure slightly. I hope this allays your concerns. Adam Black talkcontribs 19:17, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

LTA at ANI

[edit]

Hi, that was LTA, follow WP:RBI. Myrealnamm (💬Let's talk · 📜My work) 22:55, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I have seen those vile comments multiple times already so knew it was LTA but I was unaware of RBI so I will bare that in mind in future. I was following the advice that every reverted edit should result in a message on the editor's talk page. I'm obviously not an admin so can't block, but I reported it to oversight knowing that either an admin looking at the history or an oversighter would revdel it and block the IP. Adam Black talkcontribs 23:06, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Excuse me, I forgot about the B in RBI... No prob! Usually they're not oversighted, but only Revision Deleted by admins, so it's not necessary. On high traffic pages admins will easily spot it and block the IP, so there's no need of posting it to AIV either. Cheers, Myrealnamm (💬Let's talk · 📜My work) 23:46, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I thought your username was familiar; you gave me my first barnstar last year :) Part of my reasoning is that it is a high traffic page and so an admin could miss it if there are a number of comments by non-admin editors between reversion and an admin's next visit. There are only so many admins, and fewer still are regularly active. I didn't think AIV was the right venue for personal attacks, even in non-high traffic pages. Question from HaniaMac (15:18, 23 February 2025)

[edit]

Hello, In the article about Monmouth School, my father Otto Maciag is mentioned. I would like to create an article linked to this name so that I can add his biography, as summarised by him in our art book about The Three Maciag Artists. Originally, Monmouth Wiki had titles for our names, but I think that these have disappeared. Please advise on how best to proceed. --HaniaMac (talk) 15:18, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Ilikemycheesedrippybruh120 (02:16, 25 February 2025)

[edit]

Hello, Ilikemycheesedrippybruh120 here. In the "Choose topics you are interested in editing" section of the user home page, the first two buttons found in the "History and Society" section of it are "Biography (all)" and "Biography (women)". Not including another button for men feels biased. To clarify, I would say the same if there was only a button for men and not one for women. There needs to be more gender balance, and so far, I feel that the current feminist system isn't being effective enough to make moves to true equality.

Please understand, and have a good night. --Ilikemycheesedrippybruh120 (talk) 02:16, 25 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
