Question from Unsung history June 26 2024

[edit]

is the saba islander (https://thesabaislander.com/)a reliable source for wikipedia standards? UnsungHistory (talk) 03:14, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That's a tough one. WP:BLOG explains when you can use blog sources: in short, not often. However, his biography on that website shows that he has published books with major publishers (eg MacMillan), so you could track those down. His newspaper columns, maybe. But I expect they aren't online. -- asilvering (talk) 03:54, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
To be more specific,in the article Island council (Netherlands Antilles),the statement "The latter three were until 1 April 1983[citation needed] governed by a single island council:",so the saba islander (https://thesabaislander.com/2013/04/01/aprl-1st-1983-april-1st-2013/ and https://thesabaislander.com/)support this statement, but I am unsure if I can cite it or not. UnsungHistory (talk) 01:03, 28 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'd expect that to be in some other source somewhere, but this is better than nothing, so what I would do here is add this source, remove the citation needed tag, but then add this one: Template:Better source needed. -- asilvering (talk) 01:10, 28 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
ok thanks,by the way,how do i mark a conversation as "done"? UnsungHistory (talk) 19:19, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Do you mean this: Template:Archive top? Or are you just looking for an icon? There's a list of those at Template:Close. -- asilvering (talk) 01:32, 5 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe I saw something wrong,i could not find evidence it exists,or misunderstood Template:Unprod that is not what i meant UnsungHistory (talk) 19:17, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Aiza.za.za (16:40, 10 July 2024)

[edit]

hi! i am new to editing. how large are the edits i can make as a new editor? can i add new sections, or reorder existing sections? thank you so so much --Aiza.za.za (talk) 16:40, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to wikipedia, @Aiza.za.za! I'll drop some helpful links on your user talk page. There's no limit to the size or impact of your edits, technically speaking. However, if you're making a bunch of different changes, many editors prefer to make them in multiple steps. This way, if someone objects to one of the changes you made, but not the others, it's easier for them to revert just that change. Also, since there's no way to save your work other than by publishing it, if you're paranoid about losing what you've written, you'll want to publish in smaller chunks. Personally, if I'm rearranging sections on an article, I'll make an edit that is only that, and leave text changes for a subsequent edit. If I'm writing new text, I tend to stop and publish every paragraph or two. -- asilvering (talk) 17:11, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I’m curious why you closed it as keep when there was not a single policy-based argument to do so. Each of the “keep” articles merely claimed notability, but notability only suggest coverage, not a dedicated article. Qwirkle (talk) 05:27, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I explained why in the close notice: not a single editor was in favour of deletion, even after Liz vacated her previous keep close to give another week for people to chime in. If you think it should be merged into another article, try WP:RM. -- asilvering (talk) 06:30, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
er, WP:PM, that is. -- asilvering (talk) 06:30, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I read that. But this isn't supposed to be a vote, where "I like it" can be a valid reason, and that's pretty much what you saw there. Qwirkle (talk) 13:29, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Those were three separate editors finding your reasons for deletion unconvincing and/or unnecessary. Your argument here, and your attempt to overturn two separate keep closes, is more "I don't like it" than any of those were "I like it". -- asilvering (talk) 16:01, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not at all. The WP:NOPAGE concerns were simple left unaddressed, and the emphasis on "three separate editors" doesnt exactly scream out "!vote." Qwirkle (talk) 16:57, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Qwirkle, this is an example of one editor (that's you) disagreeing with the broader consensus formed by everyone else in a discussion, who found your WP:NOPAGE counterargument irrelevant or unpersuasive. If I closed it any other way, the other three editors would rightly object to that close as a supervote. The fact is that we do have these stubs everywhere, and that we do accept that they ought to exist if they meet the criteria at WP:GEOLAND. AfD arguments on this kind of place hinge around whether the place meets WP:GEOLAND or not. If you want to change that much broader consensus, you'd have to go to RfC with a better proposal. For what it's worth, I'm with you - I think these geoland stubs are useless at best and misleading or even false at worst. But I don't believe any !votes to that effect were going to come through in that AfD if it were relisted, given my understanding of how WP:GEOLAND works at AfD.
Personally, I suspect no one feels so passionately about "if it meets geoland, it should have a standalone article" that they would go around reverting bold merge-and-redirects into a central article like you sort-of-proposed in your nomination statement. The next time you find a cluster of nothing-stubs like these you might try that instead of AfD and see if that ends up with a more useful outcome. -- asilvering (talk) 20:37, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How do i create a new wiki project?

[edit]

so i noticed a strange lack of exact day information for some months (november bieng the most dramatic example) compared to others (april seems to be the with the most exact day information),i want to start a wiki project to DO something about it so there are more exact day info here on wikipedia,so how do i do that? UnsungHistory (talk) 03:40, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There's probably already a wikiproject dedicated to what you want to work on. I'm not entirely sure if this is what you're talking about, but how's WP:DAYS? -- asilvering (talk) 03:51, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
so i checked WP:DAYS,they look to keep the dates in a consistent style,it could mean that they research and add exact dates to information such as in the article about Republic of suriname,"The official spelling of the country's English name was changed from "Surinam" to "Suriname" in January 1978",no exact day,it just says January, but it could not mean that,i dont know UnsungHistory (talk) 21:51, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, they're responsible for taking care of the individual days articles, like January 1 and so on. You can see what it is they do by following the link to the wikiproject and reading the page there. -- asilvering (talk) 23:03, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from SonalSehgalghb (10:33, 22 July 2024)

[edit]

Hello, I worked on a page of a Military general but the page has been declined. If you can guide me to help make the draft better to be included in the mainspace. Regards --SonalSehgalghb (talk) 10:33, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @SonalSehgalghb, this draft is looking a lot better than it was before, but it's still missing the crucial thing we need to consider subjects notable for inclusion: in-depth, independent coverage in reliable sources. You don't need to remove the citations to the MoD, but we do need more independent sources. Right now I don't see a single source that qualifies as both independent and significant coverage. The sources that looked the most promising all appear to be press releases. What you're looking for is actual reporting - something with a byline (ie, a named reporter wrote the article). It will help if you remove items that are almost completely unrelated to him, like this one [1]. -- asilvering (talk) 14:42, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, @Asilvering thanks a ton for the quick response. Your response and guidance is quite insightful in understanding where was I missing out.
I will add the relevant information as suggested.
Thanks once again.

Question from Wiki kyliekyliekylie (12:22, 26 July 2024)

[edit]

hi im literally just starting out, i wanted to get into editing because i have sometimes found blatant misinfo on wikipedia and wanted to learn how to edit to correct any future misinfo i come across, is that normal? --Wiki kyliekyliekylie (talk) 12:22, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Wiki kyliekyliekylie, welcome to wikipedia! Yes actually, a common thread among experienced editors is that they joined because something was wrong on the internet. When you go to correct something, make sure you provide a reliable source for the new information. Have a look at WP:RSP to check if a source you're about to use is reliable for the purposes of wikipedia. If there is no source for the information in a current wikipedia article, and you think the information is wrong, you don't need a reliable source to replace it - just remove it. -- asilvering (talk) 00:27, 27 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello there,

I am trying to update the title of my organization's Wikipedia page however I am not the creator. I see instruction to 'Move Page' but I am not seeing that option anywhere.

How should I go about changing the title to the page if I am not the creator?

Thanks! --Ambystomatidae macrodactylum (talk) 19:28, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ambystomatidae macrodactylum, you can't do this when you have a brand-new account. I can do it for you, or open a move discussion if that's necessary. Please guide me if I have to do anything more to improve the article.  I find that some citations and text which were unnecessary have already been removed from below article.

Draft:Purshottam Lal

Thanks. Iqacpu (talk) 04:05, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Iqacpu, you're citing wire articles (like this one [2]) multiple times from various different news websites. Please just cite the story from one place. Otherwise, it is very obvious to reviewers that you're trying to game the system (see WP:REFBOMB). I suspect Lal is notable, but you need to show it with fully independent sources - not press releases and so on. -- asilvering (talk) 22:01, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from RedPlanetBooks (12:55, 31 July 2024)

[edit]

Hi, Why can't I be transparent as a book publisher and inform that Martn C Strong has a new book? I get the Wkipedia has decided that I should hide my interest so in the pursuit of transparency how do I change my username please --RedPlanetBooks (talk) 12:55, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @RedPlanetBooks, the problem with your edit wasn't that you added new information, but that you removed a citation and changed the text without providing a new citation, by changing "2004" to "2024". Adding information about the new book is fine. You absolutely should not hide your interest; please see WP:COI for how to declare it. You've been given information on your talk page about requesting a rename. You can also simply abandon this account completely and start again with a new one that follows the username policy. -- asilvering (talk) 21:57, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from MercyNyou on Le glaive et la balance (16:06, 1 August 2024)

[edit]

Hi. One of English titles for the movie is a literal translation from French and is incorrect. “Le glaive et la balance” is “The Sword and The Scale,” not the equivalent of “The Sword and The Balance.” I realize this is a common error. May I correct it? What proof do I need to present? --MercyNyou (talk) 16:06, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@MercyNyou, thanks for spotting this. In this case, it's a common error and you can prove you're correct simply by referring someone to a dictionary if necessary - so there's really no need to add a source when you correct it. Write a clear edit summary so folks who don't read French can understand why you're making the change. If someone reverts or challenges you on it, you can discuss the issue on the talk page. -- asilvering (talk) 16:10, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. I changed it. My reference is a French-English dictionary. Is this sufficient? When you have the opportunity, let me know. Thanks. MercyNyou (talk) 16:46, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You're fine as-is, no reference required. I changed it to "scale" from "scales", though. I do have a question about the way this is formatted - right now it implies that "The Sword and the Scale" and "Two are Guilty" are both English-language titles for this film. That is, the implication is that the film is referred to in English equally by both of those titles. (I don't have a times subscription so I can't check the sole reference here.) I'm not sure this is correct - has the film ever been translated into English? Did it ever have an English title? If yes, the article shouldn't be at "Le glaive et la balance" at all, but at the English-language title it was released under. Can you clarify this for me? -- asilvering (talk) 17:00, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So there is a dubbed English version. I believe it’s also edited and has a shorter runtime. I have never seen the English version. I’m not sure if the English version exists on home media and if the French title is used in the credits.
From what I can find it was originally called by the French title in the USA and at some point the English title “Two are Guilty” was added to posters late e.g. Le Glaive et la balance (Two are Guilty). I could probably check what it was called in the movie listing in the archives. I know this was released in New York City.
I’m not sure if I can find the original posters or how it was originally marketed. I can do further research, although I understand if you’d prefer the original translatio MercyNyou (talk) 17:34, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, this is all very helpful. I've made another edit to the article to clarify this. Thank you! -- asilvering (talk) 17:41, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
To explain a bit further, we generally ought to avoid the implication that an English translation of a title "is" the English title when it is actually just a literal translation of the original-language title provided for readers who aren't familiar with the original language. When you use Template:Literal translation like I did in my recent edit, that makes this clearer. I also wanted to avoid the impression that "Two are Guilty" is the "official" English-language title of the film, not for readers' sake in this case but for future editors' sake. This is because typically we would want the article to be at the English title rather than the title in the original language. But since it looks like this was the title used for marketing purposes rather than intended as an actual "English name" for the film, it would be incorrect to move it there. -- asilvering (talk) 17:46, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for clarifying. MercyNyou (talk) 18:09, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

UnsungHistory (talk) 11:21, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@UnsungHistory, it sounds like you just saw someone's custom signature. Editors can change their signature to whatever they like (within reason) in user preferences. This includes colours. You can't use "reply" unless you're looking at something that uses the Discussion Tools widget. That widget works basically everywhere on Talk pages, with some exceptions. One of the exceptions is that if someone writes something in the source editor and then doesn't put their signature on it correctly. Without a signature, the reply link won't show up. That might have been what you saw. If you don't think that's what happened and you can remember what specific page you had trouble with replying on, let me know which it was and I can have a look. -- asilvering (talk) 12:09, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
