Hey, I saw your comment on Draft:William J. Thorn (athletics coach). I wasn't actually notified by the user that it was rejected, but thanks for asking for clarification on the reasoning for rejection - the same user rejected another draft of mine Draft:Craig Angelos (the athletic director of Hawaii), and I was not able to get any more detail on that one either. I'm not going to ask you to review them - that can be a lengthy process - but could you maybe make a similar request there? If there's specific feedback, I can try and correct any issues, so it's disappointing when nothing specific is given. Toa Nidhiki05 (Work) (talk) 17:40, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) You don't have to use AfC, you know. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 18:35, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I actually do - I use this account for disclosed paid editing (hence the name, and my user page, and disclosures in edit summaries and on talk pages), and using AfC for articles is absolutely mandatory for that per WP:PAY. I try to follow all guidelines when doing this, which includes submitting new articles for peer review through AfC. Toa Nidhiki05 (Work) (talk) 18:56, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Toa Nidhiki05 (Work): As the user has not responded in 24 hours, and this issue has happened previously (no reply to a comment regarding the decline), I accepted Thorn myself, given that the article seemed to be of high quality and he seems notable. AFDs

[edit]

Hello, BeanieFan11,

Lately, it seems like I've seen you make valuable comments in AFD discussions but you don't cast a "vote". Is there a reason why? I hope it has nothing to do with keeping a high AFD agreement percentage but that doesn't seem like something you'd care about. As a frequent AFD closer, I'd appreciate it if you would take a stand on what you think should happen with articles because I know you do your homework and make a thoughtful decision. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 05:40, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Liz: Its mainly because of how disorganized the notability criteria for sports has become. I usually comment on ones which I feel have a very good chance of being notable. Due to the changes in NSPORT, though, one is not supposed to be allowed to be kept until it is 'demonstrated that SIGCOV exists', something that can be absurd in some situations. I try to only vote on the ones which have been demonstrated to have SIGCOV, or, failing that, a very strong argument otherwise for its keeping. For many of them (especially older, foreign topics), while they have a very high chance of being notable, I don't feel right voting 'keep' when there hasn't been sufficient coverage demonstrated and I can't think of a strong enough argument to keep. BeanieFan11 (talk) 14:32, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) Historically, voting keep at too many borderline AfDs just gets you badgered and your creations targeted (if you have any). Less stressful to just comment sometimes. Beanie was brought to ANI a few years ago when he really didn't even do anything. The reporting user was interaction-banned in a separate discussion later for hounding Beanie. That's not the only person who has targeted Beanie either. No sanctions came out of the other case though. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 19:29, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, if true, that's just tragic. No one should be harrassed for comments at an AFD discussion unless they are clearly AI-generated or they are just a series of "per nom" votes. Sorry you had to deal with that, BeanieFan11. Being called to ANI is no fun at all. But I appreciate your thoughtful response here to my query. I understand your position, I wish some other editors took AFDs as seriously as you do. Liz Read! Talk! 04:48, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Notcharizard, and that’s why it’s better to create content in draft space. Had you done so, it would have been shown to Beanie that someone is already working on the article. It doesn’t show if the content sits in a sandbox somewhere. Schwede66 18:49, 10 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Schwede66 I always make things in my sandbox first while I’m just find resources, so I don’t make a draft for a topic who turns out not to be notable enough :) Otherwise I’d have quite a few abandoned drafts! Once I’m sure the topic’s notable, I create a draft, which in this case is when I found out an article has just been made!
I feel like you’re trying to lecture me, but I stand by this method and it’s not a big deal at all that this happened, I found it pretty funny! -- NotCharizard 🗨 04:04, 11 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I’m not lecturing you. All I did is tell you of a way of preventing such double ups. You can work the way that suits you best. Having articles in draft space that you don’t get over the notability threshold is not a problem either; you can just ask for them to be deleted. Schwede66 05:09, 11 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If you're going to get involved…

[edit]

…you ought to familiarize yourself with the situation, where the article creator was recently WP:CBANNED for countless hours of timesinks via COI/UPE going back more than a decade creating a walled garden of over 400 articles cited mostly to poor-quality sources. Some of us are trying to clean up the encyclopedia and it's a massive effort. Please refer to:

Left guide (talk) 22:10, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • I don't have the time to read through all that. What specifically is wrong with Charles O. Goold and Inchling (the two I restored) – they looked relatively well-developed with sources that seemed decent? (Also, what COI could he have with a century old children's play?) BeanieFan11 (talk) 22:18, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Some of the issues with Greg's articles is they sometimes use unreliable sources, fail verification and/or the claims are exaggerated so you have do a thorough review. The COI is his him writing about his family, related people and topics. I notice in the article about Goold, a book published by Arcadia Publishing is used, which often is not a reliable source and heavy reliance on the hyper-local newspaper the Carmel Pine Cone. S0091 (talk) 14:20, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you S0091. We have someone who appears to be new to this walled garden innocuously "defending" a couple of Greg's articles without having a full awareness of the situation. @Netherzone: as the one who added the notability tag to Inchling along with years of experience dealing with these sources and this topic area, would you mind briefly explaining the problems with the sources and the ways they are being used? You tend to articulate source analysis better than I can. Left guide (talk) 15:57, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My concern is: are the issues really that serious that they need to be mass removed by the dozens? Have Arcadia and the Pine Cone been determined to be unreliable? We've got very few editors who write decent articles on historical topics, so we better get it right if we decide that its necessary to mass throw them out. BeanieFan11 (talk) 16:00, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
When there's 400+ articles worth of these similar sets of sources, and most of us would rather spend time doing other things of a more personal preference on Wikipedia and in real life, it's extraordinarily difficult to do anything other than mass removal. Ironically, Pine Cone and Arcadia are probably the two sources that have been discussed the most ad nauseum on endless rounds of talk page discussions, with Greg being the only one who believed they were reliable for establishing notability, in his own extremely persistent way. Left guide (talk) 16:19, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Arcadia Publishing has been discussed a few times at RSN and needs to be used with extreme caution because often the authors are not recognized experts and often they have a vested interest in promoting the subject. Some editors have noted factual errors. I came across one that was written by a local real estate agent. I am not sure the issue with Pine Cone is reliability as much as its use to establish notability given it is hyper local publication. These sources have been discussed with Greg and at various AfDs several times and consensus I believe has consistently been neither can be used to establish notability. S0091 (talk) 16:27, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @BeanieFan11, yes, @Left guide is correct. The articles are not "decent" if sources are misrepresented enmass and unreliable sources are used in the majority of them. If you do decide to take the time to investigate in depth, read through the talk page archives of the editor. The problems with COI go all the way back to 2007 and later with UPE editing, and the sourcing issues (part of the block) run the course.
Personally, I see no issue whatsoever with the redirect, and I doubt the Inchling article would survive an AfD. Re: the biography, many of the bios were written about local people who were simply doing their job and are not notable. Bits and pieces of non-sigcov are often woven together to form a synthesis to make the person sound notable (this often would include misrepresenting sources and simply making up original research.
Back to Inchling...I don't have time at the moment to do an in-depth source analysis table for 21 (refbombing is also often a problem with these articles) however they seem to be hyper-local coverage in a weekly tabloid (Carmel Pine Cone), press releases in other local publications and books by marginal presses like Acadia or Valley Press, or user-submitted content on TFAO. I think redirecting or merging to the playwrights article is the best solution. Netherzone (talk) 16:33, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I still question whether e.g. the Pine Cone is unusable solely for being local, but as there do seem to be some issues I'll take a step back and let others deal with the articles. BeanieFan11 (talk) 16:48, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
BeanieFan, thanks for offering to step back from this complicated and time consuming clean up situation. FYI, I just had a quick look at the Goold biography and want to share my thoughts. It is part of the Carmel walled garden that was identified by multiple editors and administrators. It's a fluffed and puffed creation of a person who was simply living his life and doing his job. City trustees and board members do not have inherent notability as politicians, nor do bankers.
Here are the problems with the sourcing. There is one decent source, the bio in the 1925 Watkins book. The "NPS" source is not about him, it is a mention of a building associated with him, people don't inherit notability from buildings, and it is questionable if the building itself is notable, it's not on the NRHP. Additionally, the source is misrepresented as the National Park System, but it is really from the California Parks and Recreation Department. The Hale and Dramov sources are from questionable presses, and the rest of the sources are hyper-local weekly tabloid and/or press releases.
Also I want you to know that I deeply respect the work you do on DYK and in saving articles that are notable, even if the subject may seem obscure. I like doing that too, and have saved quite a few such as Scovern Hot Springs, Bernadette Vigil, Piñon, Colorado, Bucket of Blood Street and others. My best wishes to you, and see you around! Netherzone (talk) 17:04, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I hate to beat a dead horse over here, but just for the record, that 1925 Watkins book is published by S. J. Clarke which according to its Wikipedia article is a self-publishing firm and thus WP:SPS, (but even if I'm somehow mistaken, it wouldn't be enough on its own to establish notability especially since it also appears to be an indiscriminate source) and that was one of the factors involved in my initial decision to redirect. Thanks as always to Netherzone for the skillful mediation, and to BeanieFan11 for being willing to listen and communicate with the community. Left guide (talk) 20:14, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not a dead horse at all, Left guide, since I am pretty sure it has been used in other articles. BeanieFan, sorry to take up your talk page with this. If you prefer, this discussion can be move to another talk page. Netherzone (talk) 21:26, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Saving AfDs for college football QBs

Hey, so there's an editor going around nominating a series of college football QBs for AfD, and it's not clear whether they are doing WP:BEFORE searches or even assessing the sources already in the article. Revisiting the improvement of sports stubs

[edit]

Hello! Doing new page patrol for the massive amount of sports biographies has reminded me about the effort to get some of them fleshed out with existent but hard-to-find significant coverage. It's not really my area of expertise, but you've been doing good work toward making that happen. Are we still considering a broader effort to get these cleaned up through an event or drive, or something similar? I'd really like for Category:Sports biographies lacking sources containing significant coverage to be cleared, and obviously it would be better to do that through high quality articles over deletion if it's feasible. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 21:02, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Thebiguglyalien: I still hope eventually to do it, although I haven't really made progress in the past months to be honest. I still have the format I made here, though I'd likely make some changes and re-organizing (I think I made scoring too complicated). The main issue was that I'm not sure exactly how to go about starting up a new competition, especially in getting decent participation, etc... I don't have much time right now, but I can think about ways to do it – maybe we could shoot for December or January as a time to hold it? BeanieFan11 (talk) 21:44, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
