AfD nomination of Celebrate Bisexuality Day[edit]

An editor has nominated Celebrate Bisexuality Day, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Celebrate Bisexuality Day and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 07:59, 21 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AIM[edit]

Hey, do you ever get on aim anymore? I always wanna ask your advice on wiki bisexual things! Andral (talk) 20:09, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Category:Bisexual books, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Category:Bisexual books has been empty for at least four days, and its only content has been links to parent categories. (CSD C1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Category:Bisexual books, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Bi links[edit]

Hi, I noticed you added a whole bunch of bi-related links to Sexuality and gender identity-based cultures. The LGBT section of that article has now been split into LGBT culture, and I'm trying to do some cleanup. Could you narrow the list to a handful that are notable in bi culture? (Or if they're all extremely notable, could you organise them?) Thanks, --Alynna (talk) 02:58, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, all should be clearer if you read this Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets/Ebfilms. --triwbe (talk) 22:19, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

All the evidence is in the edits. You have to make of it what you will starting with the deletion through to the latest actions. --triwbe (talk) 22:31, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Full story, as I and most others involved see it. A user Ebfilms (talk · contribs) had created (multiple times) the artice E.B. Hughes which was declared autobiographical and conflict of interest and was not so much deleted but nuked Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/E.B. Hughes (2nd nomination). In his talk page Ebfilms, may be E.B. Hughes himself made references to other film producers who he claimed were less notable than him, i.e. Kyle Schickner. After deletion Ebfiles continued his attacks on his talk page (the only place he could edit as a blocked user) and he was eventually fully blocked for continuous abuse see here.

Shortly after this user created a number of sockpuppets to evade the block and started vandalising Kyle Schickner and asking for it be deleted. he finally managed to make an AfD Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kyle Schickner which was thrown out in less than a day with a consensus to keep the article and block the nominator and all his other user names. All the sockpuppets have now been identified formally and blocked. I hope he realises that if anyone touches the Kyle Schickner without supported refs it will be revereted very quickly. --triwbe (talk) 13:11, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Passing this along, FYI. Things seem to have cooled down on the Melissa Farley article, so I issued a Request for Comments to fix any remaining issues with it.

New UK Group, advice?[edit]

Hi there, I see you've done a lot of work on the bisexual articles, this is great!

I think wikipedia should have a link somewhere to the new UK activist group "The Bisexual Index" (www.bisexualindex.org.uk) but I don't see a page for bisexual organisations per se.

Can you advise if you think this is a good idea, and if it is where it should go? I don't think we're notable enough for an article yet.

A tag has been placed on Campus Pride requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for organizations and companies. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Malleus Fatuorum 02:13, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Campus Pride[edit]

Well the only thing you added to the article after I placed the notability tag, was a "see also" section. Notability is a core requirement and should be evident in the first two sentences. Anyhow, its not that I don't appreciate your efforts, but not all topics warrant an individual article. -Reconsider! 02:46, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think any of your edits were inadvertently removed as the result of placing the notability + CSD tags. I'm still waiting, tentatively for your improvements (its been over 30 minutes since you last edited the page). -Reconsider! 03:06, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Right, so an edit conflict is your explanation for not being able to expand on the article? You've had plenty of opportunities to re-insert the content, except all you've done so far is put in a 'see also' sections. I really don't know why you're making such a fuss over this, all you have to do is establish the notability of the subject. Its simple. -Reconsider! 03:54, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

NYC Meetup: Saturday, December 4[edit]

We meet outside by the trees at 5:00 PM.

Our next Wikipedia NYC Meetup is this weekend on Saturday Dec 4 at Brooklyn Museum during their awesome First Saturdays program, starting at 5 PM.

A particular highlight for the wiki crowd will be 'Seductive Subversion: Women Pop Artists, 1958–1968', and the accompanying "WikiPop" project, with specially-created Wikipedia articles on the artists displayed on iPads in the gallery.

This will be a museum touring and partying meetup, so no excuses about being a shy newbie this time. Bring a friend too!

You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.

To keep up-to-date on local events, you can also join our mailing list.

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference[edit]

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being minor in the usual way.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. With the script in place, you can continue with this functionality indefinitely (its use is governed by WP:MINOR). If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 18:59, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:BrendaHowardEarly90s.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:BrendaHowardEarly90s.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

License tagging for File:Aiblogofinal.gif[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Aiblogofinal.gif. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 23:05, 9 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have reverted your edit. You seem to have missed the point that is given in the template on the image page. Any permission given needs to be able to be verified. So that means either a link to the image's web page, which has a CC-BY-2.0 license OR or an email from the copyright owner is sent or forwarded to [email protected] to allow an OTRS ticket to be applied. A fuller explanation can also be found at WP:DCM. I have reset the date to allow you a full period to obtain permission. Just stating "permission given", although maybe tolerated in the past, is not now possible - for about the last year we have the pseudo-speedy templates, which give the uploader a fixed time to correct the problems. If you planning to go down the OTRS route, then you may add a {{OTRS pending}} template to the File page.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:49, 20 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Verifying Brenda Howard[edit]

I'd like to help to source some of the text in this article. I have a concern about a "book", Bisexual rights activists which references Brenda Howard. Seems that it merely takes info from Wikipedia and on-demand prints it out...do you know anything about this? also please see the Discussion of Brenda Howard for my note...thanks Pjefts (talk) 01:25, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Stories Project[edit]

Aloha!

My name is Victor and I work with the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization that supports Wikipedia. We're chronicling the inspiring stories of the Wikipedia community around the world, including those from readers, editors, and donors. Stories are absolutely essential for any non-profit to persuade new people to support the cause, and we know the vast network of people who use Wikipedia have so much to share.

I find stories that drive our annual fundraising efforts. It's important to convey the incredible diversity of people who've come to rely upon Wikipedia every day.

I see that you have an interest in human sexuality. That is an immensely important topic to be contributing to! I'd really like the opportunity to interview you to tell your story, with the possibility of using it in our materials, on our community websites, or as part of this year’s fundraiser to encourage others to support Wikipedia.

I'm hoping you will elaborate on your story with me, either over the phone, by Skype, by Facebook, by email, or any means you like. Please let me know if you're inclined to take part in the Wikipedia Stories Project and we'll set up a good time to discuss further.

Thank you,

Victor Grigas

Discussion[edit]

{{WPJournals|class=List}} {{LGBTProject|class=List}} {{WikiProject Sexuality|class=List}}

discussion of journal contents article[edit]

The following discussion took place at the talk p. for List of volumes and issues of Journal of Bisexuality. As the article is now deleted, I copied the discussion here, because I think it is of some general interest. CynntWorkStuff, if you'd rather I moved it elsewhere, let me know and I will do so. == Contested deletion ==

Hi there. I knew this page was under construction becasue a lot of people have been asking for it as useful and needed. The abstracts are not an "exact" copy but as pretty darn close. I was signing in this AM to help. So what should we be doing instead? Thnx CyntWorkStuff (talk) 14:20, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Perhaps people have been asking for a page like this, but it is not needed, because all this information is readily available from multiple databases as well as the journal's online access page (for free). I fail to see what the interest is of copying all this stuff here. Note that "pretty darn close" still is a copyright violation. Note also that, as far as I know, leaving out the abstracts but "just" copying the tables of contents would also constitute a copyright violation. And if all that is not enough yet, even if there would be no copyright issue, this whole article goes against WP:NOTADIRECTORY. I really don't see how this could ever be kept as a valid article. Sorry... --Guillaume2303 (talk) 14:56, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • It's kind of "hidden" unless you know where to look. So the average researcher wasn't even aware of it's existence. As a result people have been reinventing the wheel, and not citing any of it. For years. People (read students, HS, Undergrad, Grad & general researchers) have thought there was no research at all on any of this becasue they didn't know it existed. So they either tried to redo it or they (frankly) made incorect stuff up. SO there must be some way to at least list the contents of the journal. Somehow. CyntWorkStuff (talk) 15:16, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • And (not to get other good and useful pages into trouble) can I point out List of Lambda Literary Awards winners and nominees for science fiction, fantasy and horror and List of Lambda Literary Award winners which it is my understanding were some of the models for this. There was a clear worry that it might not be "formatted" correctly. But also a clear understanding that there has to be some way to get this info listed in a useful and encyclopediac (is that even a word?) way. So again if we can go for the intent can you help us with this? It realy is unknown data. CyntWorkStuff (talk)
      • Our article on the journal has two link to the online content (one in the infobox, one in the "external links" section). If people don't see/use that, then I don't really see how this list article would remedy things. In any case, even though I sympathize with your problem, WP is an encyclopedia and does not exist to right wrongs. (Especially not if that includes creating other wrongs such as introducing copyvios). As for the other lists, I had a quick glance and even though one can debate about their usefulness, they don't seem to contain any copyright violations. This list, however, by design will be a copyright violation and I don't see how you could get around that. --Guillaume2303 (talk) 15:31, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
        • I apologize for this BTW. Here is the problem. They don't know to go to the "Journal" article. As you know people do a search for content usually not for a direct topic name. So if they were say looking for more information on images of LGBTQ+ people in contemporary media, they would not think to find something called "Journal of Bisexuality" and then click thru each year, then look thru each volume in each year and only then find some useful articles. And I'm using a current topic being done by a smart and web savvy post-grad researcher as an example. And she had no idea it existed. BiAndBi (talk) 15:38, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
          • And sorry for pushing in here. How about just a list of volumes, dates titles and authors on the main article. Would that be ok? Again as I had told the others I looked at other articles to see how this could be done. BiAndBi (talk) 15:41, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"As reviewing administrator, I'm deleting the article, both for copyvio and for promotionalism. Abstracts are unquestionably copyright; the copyright status of tables of content is debatable: personally, I consider reproducing them fair use.

We have sometimes permitted lists of contents in exceptional cases where the material is not readily available, especially for journals in the humanities in the pre-electronic era, and especially when they are more in the nature of lists of special issues issues than lists of article titles, though this usually requires a discussion in each instance. We have often accepted lists of especially notable articles, included within an article for a journal, but expect evidence of that,

The provision of a list of this sort so that "people who search for content" on a general topic will find articles in this particular journal is promotionalism. Even if we did this for all journals equally, Wikipedia is not a subject index, but an encyclopedia. it is not intended to provide access to all published work on a topic, but rather to present basic information and selected highly appropriate references to substantiate the information and as a start to going further.

I note promotionalism is possible even when a person is merely interested in a subject, not a part of an organization or affiliate. Obviously, the rules aren't as rigid, because all of us write usually on topics in which we are interested. But we all have to do it in a way that does not promote those things we think highly of, just add encyclopedic content about them." DGG ( talk ) 17:09, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Torie Osborn[edit]

Hi there, I just read the message you left on my talk page regarding vandalism reverts in the Torie Osborn article. To be honest, if you want to know why that editor reverted your edits as vandalism, you would be better off asking that editor than asking me since I'm not the one who reverted your edits. I took a look at the article anyways to see the edits you were talking about, this one [1] looks like you had some manual of style errors in your citations, which easily could have been fixed like I did to a previous edit you made, so that one is not even close to being vandalism. The other edit [2] removed the tags at the top, stating in edit summary "issues addressed so tags removed" when there were more problems with the article than just needing sources, so I would guess that's why that edit was reverted. Still, that edit was made in good faith since you thought you had addressed the issues, so I wouldn't call that vandalism either. It's posible the editor may have just used the wrong summary when reverting, or was frustrated by the fact that the tags in that article were removed multiple times in the last couple of days without all the issues being resolved. Regardless, like I said above, ask that editor, I can only guess a reason, he can tell you exactly why it was done. While looking for these two edits, I did notice that editor has gone through the article and appears to have resolved some of the problems surrounding the tags, but there are still more issues to be dealt with. The article Campbell Soady Gallery has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Notability issue raised in 2010. No sources since 2009 for this community center.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
