Notice concerning an action at ArbCom

[edit]

A request has been filed for the Arbitration Committee to look at long-term issues with editing in the Article Titles and MOS areas at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case#Article titles/MOS. I have added your name as a party, since it is clear that you have been involved at RMs, or at pages that are within the scope of the action.

Bacchus, I really hope things are going well for you. I will understand if you are reluctant to get involved with this one. But I'm certain that your evidence and assessments would be invaluable to ArbCom if it decides to proceed with a case.

Best wishes!

Article titles and capitalisation case

[edit]

An arbitration case involving you has been opened, and is located at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Article titles and capitalisation. Evidence that you wish the Arbitrators to consider should be added to the evidence sub-page, at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Article titles and capitalisation/Evidence. Please add your evidence by February 12, 2012, which is when the evidence phase closes. You can contribute to the case workshop sub-page, Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Article titles and capitalisation/Workshop. For a guide to the arbitration process, see Wikipedia:Arbitration/Guide to arbitration. For the Arbitration Committee, Alexandr Dmitri (talk) 15:02, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to learn that you're doing the same as numerous other editors by leaving the project. All the best, and I hope you find a warm welcome if you reconsider. -- Trevj (talk) 14:58, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

An arbitration case regarding article titles and capitalisation has now closed and the final decision is viewable at the link above. The following remedies have been enacted:

  1. All parties are reminded to avoid personalizing disputes concerning the Manual of Style, the article titles policy ('WP:TITLE'), and similar policy and guideline pages, and to work collegiately towards a workable consensus. In particular, a rapid cycle of editing these pages to reflect one's viewpoint, then discussing the changes is disruptive and should be avoided. Instead, parties are encouraged to establish consensus on the talk page first, and then make the changes.
  2. Pmanderson is indefinitely prohibited from engaging in discussions and edits relating to the Manual of Style or policy about article titles.
  3. Standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all pages related to the English Wikipedia Manual of Style and article titles policy, broadly construed.
  4. Born2cycle is warned that his contributions to discussion must reflect a better receptiveness to compromise and a higher tolerance for the views of other editors.

For the Arbitration Committee, Alexandr Dmitri (talk) 23:01, 23 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can you join an article rename discussion

[edit]

Hi GTBacchus,

I noticed you were involved in the closure of the Swami Vivekananda article rename discussion, here: [1]

Could you also look at a similar discussion here [2]. This is the 7th day of discussion. The article was originally called Jagadguru Kripalu Maharaj for a long time, and a week ago, a user changed it to Kripalu Maharaj. I made several arguments, and other people have made arguments but overall, I think that wikipedia policy dictates that article should be changed back to Jagadguru Kripalu Maharaj, and I think I have shown that.

Can you please take a look?

Thanks. Lotusjuice (talk) 12:22, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there Lotusjuice. Not sure how much GT checks his talk page these days. I know he posted a "retired" template a while back, and he hasn't been real active for a while. Personally I hope he's still about and returns soon, but just thought I'd mention this in case he doesn't notice it. Best of luck though. — Ched :  ?  12:52, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

GB calling

[edit]

Hello GTB :-)

I was looking at article "2018" and found: <<Estimated completion date for the Kingdom Tower in Saudi Arabia which is expected to become the tallest building in the world and the first to reach 1 kilometer in height.>> which doesn't look right to me! I have no idea what the height should be though, so I'll leave it for you to fix. I was checking to see if there was a note of the 2 consecutive blue moons in 2018, but I believe the time zones may be wrong for this to occur in the USA. Ref: http://www.fullmoon.info/en/fullmoon-calendar/2018.html (2 full moons in January, followed by 2 full moons in March). That's pretty rare even for blue moons!

I do hope you're well, hugs Galaxybabe (talk) 15:08, 27 June 2012 (UTC)Galaxybabe[reply]

This is to let you know that an ongoing poll is taking place to move Burma to Myanmar. I know this happened just recently but no administrator would close these frequent rm's down, so here we go again. This note is going out to wikipedia members who have participated in Burma/Myanmar name changing polls in the past. It does not include banned members nor those with only ip addresses. Thank you. Novel categories

[edit]

Hi, I just wanted to stop by and thank you for this conversation which I actually enjoyed. After logging out and thinking about it, I realized that I probably have never understood how categorization is used here in regards to novels and I tend to treat cats as tags - the more the merrier on a page. But also probably the reason I'm being chastised on my talk, so might take a low profile for a while. To be honest l laughed to see the black banner at the top of your page b/c my blue banner is close to going black. All that said, if you do manage to kick start another conversation that's useful and we can actually find a solution without a ton of spinning, I'd be thrilled. Truthkeeper (talk) 12:17, 28 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re your talk page: Yikes! After a day or two back from retirement, it sure is easy for me to remember why I left. When my orange "you have a message" banner lit up, I had a moment of panic. Thank goodness it's you. If I'm going to stick around, I either need to get my patience up to Job level, or it won't be pretty.

So, apparently this "tags" idea is called Wikipedia:Category intersection around here, and that's the page for talking about it. I've made a wake-up-the-talk-page post there, referencing the current situation, but so far the only reply has been from JPL, telling me that my summary was wrong. We'll see how it goes, but I wouldn't hold my breath as far as avoiding "tons of spinning". I'm going to keep making noise about it for now, so if nothing else, people will remember that there was a lot of noise made about it. Oh, and unsurprisingly, the German Wikipedia has already implemented this, presumably because of how gosh-darn much sense it makes. -GTBacchus(talk) 12:36, 28 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I know that moment of panic when the orange bar lights up! Anyway, thanks for jumping in, category intersection is apparently what we need, so if something good comes from this it will have been worthwhile. Welcome back btw. I won't be editing much in the next some weeks but will be watching this as it spins out. Truthkeeper (talk) 16:19, 28 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre

[edit]
Hello! Now, some of you might have already received a similar message a little while ago regarding the Recruitment Centre, so if you have, there is no need to read the rest of this. This message is directed to users who have reviewed over 15 Good article nominations and are not part of WikiProject Good articles (the first message I sent out went to only WikiProject members).

So for those who haven't heard about the Recruitment Centre yet, you may be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around it (to the right). The answer? WikiProject Good articles will be launching a Recruitment Centre very soon! The centre will allow all users to be taught how to review Good article nominations by experts just like you! However, in order for the Recruitment Centre to open in the first place, we need some volunteers:

  • Recruiters: The main task of a recruiter is to teach users that have never reviewed a Good article nomination how to review one. To become a recruiter, all you have to do is meet this criteria. If we don't get at least 5-10 recruiters to start off with (at the time this message was sent out, 2 recruiters have volunteered), the Recruitment Centre will not open. If interested, make sure you meet the criteria, read the process and add your name to the list of recruiters. (One of the great things about being a recruiter is that there is no set requirement of what must be taught and when. Instead, all the content found in the process section is a guideline of the main points that should be addressed during a recruitment session...you can also take an entire different approach if you wish!) If you think you will not have the time to recruit any users at this time but are still interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters but just fill in the "Status" parameter with "Not Available".
  • Co-Director: The current Director for the centre is me (Dom497). Another user that would be willing to help with some of the tasks would be helpful. Tasks include making sure recruiters are doing what they should be (teaching!), making sure all recruitments are archived correctly, updating pages as needed, answering any questions, and distributing the feedback form. If interested, please contact me (Dom497).
  • Nominators, please read this: If you are not interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still help. In some cases a nominator may have an issue with an "inexperienced" editor (the recruitee) reviewing one of their nominations. To minimize the chances of this happening, if you are fine with a recruitee reviewing one of your nominations under the supervision of the recruiter, please add your name to the list at the bottom of this page. By adding your name to this list, chances are that your nomination will be reviewed more quickly as the recruitee will be asked to choose a nomination from the list of nominators that are OK with them reviewing the article.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing this program bring new reviewers to the Good article community and all the positive things it will bring along.

A message will be sent out to all recruiters regarding the date when the Recruitment Centre will open when it is determined. The message will also contain some further details to clarify things that may be a bit confusing.--Dom497 (talk)

Karşılama

[edit]

Hi there, I would like you to take a few minutes of your time to look once more at the titles karşılama and karsilamas. Sometimes I think The Free Encyclopedia means whoever wakes up earlier may abuse this freedom to make the encyclopedia a place for cultural pillage. In other words, if I or someone else wants to write things only from their own idiosyncrasy, without respect for other people, cultures, etc and there is no or less people from that other culture around or ready to defend it, this person may write their own WP. Greece is Greece, but Turkey is "Asia Minor". Turkish and Greek minorities in respective countries were exchanged by a population exchange agreement between the two countries, and the Greeks are "refugees" but Turks are "immigrants". There is no need to use a link to Turkey, while we abuse links about others etc. There are too many examples to this situation in WP, regrettably. And I am not accusing nor criticizing you -or WP- about anything, I just wanted to share these observations with someone. Regards. --Why should I have a User Name? h2g2 article in reduction

[edit]

This is again a new one for me <wow> I should check the code

Great way to post, on most pages I have to wade trough years of backlog.

Anyway I have tried expand the h2g2 article it was a little bare. Instead I managed to point some wikipedians to it, and they removed even more. There is something about 'Third Party Reference'. Anything about HooToo except for the Edited Guide lacks this. No newspapers talking about ThePost, Ask or the Myth.
Do you know by any chance some reliable references or cites we could use to restore the article.

By the way your badge links to the Beeb, it is a detour at best.<ok>

Trans Woman definition

[edit]

I believe there is an error (& an injustice made) in the definition Wikipedia of "trans woman"/"trans women".

It currently states, "A trans woman is a WOMAN who was assigned male at birth." I believe it should state, "A trans woman is a PERSON who was assigned male at birth and identifies as a woman."

The entry is "semi-protected" to avoid "vandalism", which I can understand, but only registered (which I am), "established" (which I am not) users can edit this. As a woman, who voted for Biden (I mention bc many feel only the right/GOP have this stance), I object to women being diminished/redefined & think our rights and safety are being impinged upon. A tag has been placed on Evelyn King (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
  • is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator.
