Guidance regarding a discussion

[edit]

Hello, I hope this message finds you well. I'm writing to seek your guidance regarding an ongoing discussion here.

I had hoped the discussion would be constructive, with all parties willing to compromise for the betterment of the article. Unfortunately, it has not gone as well as expected. Several editors (and some administrators) have applied what I consider to be an unneutral view regarding Scottish baronial titles. Their positions seem to be based more on personal opinions rather than scholarly references, and so far they have been unable to raise a good argument against my and fellow editors' contentions which are backed by proper sources. It's worth noting that some of these editors/admins have a history of reverting related edits without proper explanations. I believe their disruptive behaviour is ultimately detrimental to Wikipedia, as good-faith edits from fellow editors can be easily overridden by those abusing their power.

Given this situation, I would greatly appreciate your advice and guidance. Your input would be invaluable in helping me navigate this challenge constructively. Daniel Plumber (talk) 15:09, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Daniel Plumber Actually, that's a civil discussion compared to other conflicts I've seen. Of course, WP:REVERT does note that a proper explanation is best practice, but even those acting in the best of faith can forget to do that. The assumption of good faith is required by policy, barring evidence to the contrary; typically, politely asking why someone reverted your edit should suffice.
You'll note that I left a note at the discussion about your message here. This is to protect you, since there seems to be some accusation of recruitment.
Apologies that I lack the knowledge to be of more help. I dream of horses (Hoofprints) (Neigh at me) 00:46, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, and thanks for the advice.
I forgot to mention that, although I am not trying to recruit you, I was asking for your advice in your capacity as my mentor. This is to provide more context to other relevant editors when they visit your talk page ;-). Again, I really appreciate your guidance and perspective. Question from Viceskeeni2 (12:01, 27 August 2024)

[edit]

Hello Mr. I dream of horses, I have a question: Because editors under 500 edits are forbidden from editing on topics of Azerbaijan and Armenia, can I stil ledit on topics of only Azerbaijan. Like for example a mosque in Azerbaijan, that has nothing to do with Armenia. Or just make other regular articles on other topics or do I need 500 dits until I can make own articles --Viceskeeni2 (talk) 12:01, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Viceskeeni2 Looking at the spirit of the restrictions, I think you're fine as long as you don't start talking about the ethnic conflict that bought about those restrictions while editing the article on the hypothetical mosque. This is particularly true if you have a history of editing in other subject areas, and didn't just dive into editing about Azerbaijan. I will say, though, erring on the side of caution and doing 500 edits elsewhere isn't going to hurt anyone, particularly if you're going to write about anything controversial (politics, religion, etc.).
If you mess up, though, don't worry; unless there's something you aren't telling me, which I doubt, you'll just get a warning the first time. I dream of horses (Hoofprints) (Neigh at me) 12:53, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Viceskeeni2 (talk) 12:54, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Viceskeeni2 I want to clarify that:
  1. A genocide would definately qualify as a "conflict." If this conflict was (allegedly) perpetuated by the Armenians on the Azerbaijan people, then yes, that absolutely qualifies as being part of the Azerbaijan-Armenia qualify. That goes beyond "just an article about a mosque."
  2. This is what I meant by you'll just get a warning the first time.

Question from HazelTheHobbit (00:54, 29 August 2024)

[edit]

Sounds good! I was wondering, what are the overall guide lines for creating an article? --HazelTheHobbit (talk) 00:54, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@HazelTheHobbit You start by making sure whatever it is you're writing about actually qualifies for an article. Then, at least for your first article, you write a draft through articles for creation.
Writing an article might be easier if you go through the tutorials, etc. I linked on your talk page. I dream of horses (Hoofprints) (Neigh at me) 02:36, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
