Conflict of interest in Wikipedia

[edit]

Hi KarimKoueider. I work on conflict of interest issues here in Wikipedia, along with my regular editing. Your edits to date appear to be those of a paid editor. I am giving you notice of our Conflict of Interest guideline and Terms of Use, and will have some comments and requests for you below.

Information icon Hello, KarimKoueider. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. Editing for the purpose of advertising or promotion is not permitted. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your COI when discussing affected articles (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you.

Comments and requests

[edit]

Wikipedia is a widely-used reference work and managing conflict of interest is essential for ensuring the integrity of Wikipedia and retaining the public's trust in it. As in academia, COI is managed here in two steps - disclosure and a form of peer review. Please note that there is no bar to being part of the Wikipedia community if you want to be involved in articles where you have a conflict of interest; there are just some things we ask you to do (and if you are paid, some things you need to do).

Disclosure is the most important, and first, step. While I am not asking you to disclose your identity (anonymity is strictly protecting by our WP:OUTING policy) would you please disclose if you have some connection with any of the companies about which you have edited, directly or through a third party (e.g. a PR agency or the like)? You can answer how ever you wish (giving personally identifying information or not), but if there is a connection, please disclose it. After you respond (and you can just reply below), I can walk you through how the "peer review" part happens and then, if you like, I can provide you with some more general orientation as to how this place works. Please reply here, just below, to keep the discussion in one place. Thanks! Jytdog (talk) 03:34, 16 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello KarimKoueider. The nature of your edits gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, and that you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially egregious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to Black hat SEO.

Paid advocates are very strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists, and if it does not, from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.

Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:KarimKoueider. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=KarimKoueider|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, please do not edit further until you answer this message. Jytdog (talk) 20:29, 17 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Jytdog: I am not hired or paid by anybody. Egyptian editor trying to improve pages in the middle east and the rest of the world
Your editing is very promotional and focused entirely on commercial subjects. Please reconsider your response. Jytdog (talk) 20:36, 17 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Jytdog: So because im editing corporate pages im paid by all of them ? Disgusting accusation, im contacting wikipedia for gross accusations. That was my final answer. Im not hired or paid by anyperson or company or state

If you read the notice above and what I wrote, I have not said that you are being paid, I said that your editing very much looks that way. Thanks for replying; I will open a discussion at COIN and will post notice of that here after I do. Jytdog (talk) 20:43, 17 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Notice of Conflict of interest noticeboard discussion

[edit]

Information icon There is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard regarding a possible conflict of interest incident with which you may be involved. Thank you. Jytdog (talk) 20:51, 17 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The thread is at the bottom of that page, Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest/Noticeboard#KarimKoueider As I noted there, you may just be a "fan" but your editing is indistinguishable from someone with a conflict of interest. I would have been happy to discuss this further and explain what you should be doing, but based on your response that would not be productive. Jytdog (talk) 20:53, 17 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Jytdog: I do not exclusively edit Egyptian business, Sisecam a company you listed, is turkish. I advocate business in general with proof that I have edited Japanese businesses extensively before but tend to focus more on Egyptian business as they are very badly edited and their pages are inaccurate, outdated and with a lot of bad infobox formatting. I am sorry if my reply previously suggested that I would "not be productive" but you insisted after I claimed im not affiliated with anything. I took your response the wrong way, I would gladly take advice as im new to Wikipedia

If you approach the discussion at COIN like you are doing here, it would be helpful for you and everyone else. If you are still open minded and able to edit after that discussion is complete I would be happy to teach you some stuff. Let's see what happens at COIN. Removing maintenance tags

[edit]

Information icon Please do not remove maintenance templates from pages on Wikipedia, as you did to Egyptian Exchange, without resolving the problem that the template refers to, or giving a valid reason for the removal in the edit summary. Edit war warning

[edit]
Stop icon

Your recent editing history at Egyptian Exchange shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See BRD for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in your being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. @David J Johnson: You are also reverting my edits that contain other infobox adjustments e.g. the company type field KarimKoueider (talk) 19:00, 5 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There is no "standard" for logo size, only a size that fits well into the layout of the page. Furthermore, info box changes - be it "company type field" are not being explained by you in the Edit summary box, which is required by Wikipedia. About S.A.E.

[edit]

Hi Karim,

I understand what you're saying, but in French you do not capitalize every word in phrases, or even titles. Like for instance, movie or book titles in English are capitalized by the word (for example: The Tempest), as opposed to French where you only capitalize the first word (same example: La tempête), same thing for nationalities, they are not considered proper nouns in French (which they are not); they are merely adjectives and that's why they're treated like any adjective, and adjectives (e.g. big, small, etc) don't get capitalized. That's why even though you capitalize Égypte, you don't capitalize égyptien/égyptienne. You capitalize Liban (Lebanon), but you don't capitalize libanais/libanaise, etc. So "Egyptian Anonymous Company" (each word capitalized in English) just translates to "Société anonyme égyptienne" (first word capitalized in French). Now, even though this is how you do it in the French language, the abbreviations are still all capitalized (S.A.E.). As for the form of the link; I just thought I'd follow the custom of Wikipedia in general, where you only include the part of the phrase that's actually part of the link in the link, but I mean that's not that big of a deal though. By the way, I'm Egyptian too. MatthewS. (talk) 21:32, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@MatthewS.: I understand where you are coming from but I dont believe such application exists when the registration of companies take place. Putting aside Egyptian companies, french companies include Societe Anonyme in this form on legal documentation. eg, BNP Paribas, Engie etc. That is the reason why I believe although the capitalization is wrong in the essential french language, in company application such grammatraical rules dont apply. Thank you for your consideration and thank you for your edits on behalf of Egypt. I have been pushing hard in improving Egyptian company's pages like CIB and EFG-Hermes KarimKoueider (talk) 21:41, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@KarimKoueider: Hi Karim, in fact the way it is in the English Wikipedia in regards to capitalizing every word (Société Anonyme) is incorrect. If you go to the same BNP Paribas page (or most other company pages) but on the French language Wikipedia you will notice it's written the way I mentioned. -MatthewS. (talk)
@MatthewS.: I understand but such rules dont apply on the English wikipedia. If so, I would just suggest putting the actual correct legal type for Egyptian companies which is (شركة مساهمة مصرية (ش.م.م. Thank You KarimKoueider (talk) 22:01, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@KarimKoueider: I just realized you have a good point. The French phrase is not capitalized, but in English it is used as-is as a term but with English rules in this case, thus capitalizing each word. So I'll change it accordingly then. I appreciate your input. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. MatthewS. (talk)
@MatthewS.: Thank You for your understanding :) I'm happy we reached a conclusion KarimKoueider (talk) 02:29, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Logos

[edit]

Hi! First, thanks for the high quality logos you uploaded. I like to upload SVG versions of logos. I noticed i replaced a few you recently uploaded, and will replace a few more. Just wanted to let you know. Again, thanks for the uploads. --Ben Stone 05:39, 21 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Benstown: Thank you for the notice, I am pleased that you are working on bettering the quality of the logos. I just had a couple of questions, how do you transform a standard quality png logo into an HQ svg logo ? Also, what is the benefit of using svg over png on wikipedia ? Thank You KarimKoueider (talk) 18:46, 21 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I don't actually convert from PNG, it's not that easy to have good results. The benefit of SVG is the resolution, because it's a vector it will always stay sharp, at any size. --Ben Stone 20:09, 21 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Benstown: I would truly appreciate if you could lead me to the steps taken to produce an SVG logo so I can continue to upload logos with SVG quality. Also, I please ask to work on Porsche as the page got its SVG logo deleted, Thank You KarimKoueider (talk) 17:00, 23 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
All i do is finding existing vector logos and uploading them. Most of them can be found inside PDF files, like annual reports of companies or brochures. Usually the first place to look is the company website logo, most still use PNG, but SVG is getting more common. Many PDFs also have PNG or even JPG logos. After i find a PDF i use Inkscape to extract the logo, it takes some learning. Important note: logos that have gradients (color fading) are very difficult to extract. I hope this helps, any questions, feel free to ask. --Ben Stone 01:54, 25 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Benstown: Hey Ben, sorry to be a bother but I tried doing such with Savola Group but the logo is black on page, the source was not black KarimKoueider (talk) 02:00, 25 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Some SVGs can be more difficult, sometimes the webpage can take the SVG shape from one place, and the color from another, like a CSS file. If you use firefox, you can right-click it an select "inspect element" sometimes it shows the colors, and you can copy from there. Chrome probably has something similar. Many websites even have a javascript that generates the SVG, so you can't just save it. That's one reason i prefer extract logos from PDFs. It takes some learning! --Ben Stone 02:11, 25 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I remembered that some SVGs need to be saved in Inkscape before uploading to wikipedia, or else they are all black. I'm not sure why this happens, the Savola logo is probably a good example. BTW, i fixed the Savola and Porsche logos.--Ben Stone 06:20, 25 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Benstown: Hi Ben, I've been trying to fix the Commercial International Bank logo for almost a week to teach myself how to produce SVG logos but have failed miserably :D. The SVG logo is located on this 2017 Annual report on the first page located at the bottom right. http://www.cibeg.com/English/InvestorRelations/FinancialInformation/Annual%20Reports/Annual%20Report%202017.pdf I would really appreciate you working on it, and if you would like, I can point you to companies who need SVG logos and their respective official SVG logo on documentation, Thank You KarimKoueider (talk) 18:56, 3 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Benstown: Melrose Industries Problem with svg text format KarimKoueider (talk) 02:10, 3 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I assume you prefer that i walk you through the solution, instead of just fixing it! 1- Drag and drop the PDF into Inkscape; 2- on the PDF import settings (choose the last page), select Poppler/Cairo import; 3- ungroup the page; 4- select "Melrose" and ungroup it (delete "Buy, Improve, Sell", it's usually better to remove slogans); 5- go to edit> clone> unlink clone. It should now be a "path" and not text, and will stop doing weird things! --Ben Stone 05:54, 3 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Benstown: I have the same idea but i do it a bit differently. I dont select the poppler import, i use the internal import and make it very fine for approximating gradients. I then use the "Edit path by nodes" tool to carefully select the logo then copy and paste it. I then group the logo and delete the page. then in document properties i resize the page to a drawing.ill try the unlink clone step, Thank You KarimKoueider (talk) 11:33, 3 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The only reason that i use the poppler import is that it doesn't see text as text, but as paths. The problem with text is that it will try to find the same font on your PC, and if it doesn't find it, it will replace it with a different font, changing the logos appearance. Also the alignment and spacing may change. The poppler imports the text as symbols, and the unlink applies only to them, it probably won't work for internal import. --Ben Stone 19:48, 3 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Benstown: The text for Melrose Industries still isnt appearing even after the "unlink clone" step KarimKoueider (talk) 19:51, 3 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed it. Did you ungroup before unlinking? --Ben Stone 20:14, 3 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Benstown: I am having some issues with people reverting my edits and putting unnecessary white spaces around logos such as BASF, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BASF-Logo_bw.svg is what im doing wrong ? KarimKoueider (talk) 21:19, 6 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
As far as removing the unnecessary whitespace, it should be good. You should be careful when using "resize page to drawing" in inkscape, as many times it will clip the edges of the image (like the "y" of "chemistry", in your logo). What i usually do is, after resizing, i select "px" in "units" (in the same box as the resize button), then add a pixel or two in both width and height, then i go to "align an distribute" (ctrl+shift+a), and align to center. Back to your question, the only way of really knowing why people revert, check the edit summary, or ask them. --Ben Stone 21:56, 6 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Text logos

[edit]

Hi! Thanks for uploading so many great logos :). I thought I might tell you that logos that only consist of basic text or simple shapes fall under c:COM:TOO, and can be uploaded to Commons. E.g. File:Reach plc logo.svg is just text, and there is no creativity in it, so you can just upload it to Commons with {{pd-textlogo}}, no need to fill in a fair use rationale. — Berrely • TalkContribs 12:18, 3 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
