Makeover of Portuguese football

[edit]

Hi there

You may have noticed that I am seeking to undertake a makeover of Portuguese football on Wikipedia. It will not happen over night and involves a lot of work. There are three issues that I would like to address concerning page titles of articles and wondered whether you are supportive:

1. We use the full club name e.g. Clube de Futebol União de Lamas and not the abbreviated version C.F. União de Lamas. However abbreviated versions of the name will be linked to the article.

2. In the season articles we use the Portuguese name e.g. 2011–12 Segunda Divisão and not 2011–12 Portuguese Second Division.

3. In the District Football Associations we use the Portuguese name e.g. Associação de Futebol de Aveiro and not Aveiro Football Association.

We can then place the change to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football as we do not currently have a Task Group.

It would also be helpful if you can advise on the criteria you use for the inclusion of Notable former players in club articles.

NB: Sent to Secretaria and Vasco Amaral. Are there any other prime editors covering Portuguese football?

Hi there OCTOPUS, VASCO here,

thanks for your invitation, i will help in any way that i can (the fact that i am planning to retire any day/month soon notwithstanding), here's my two cents on the issues;

1 - i don't think the full name of clubs is warranted, we have FC Barcelona and not Futbol Club Barcelona, SD Huesca and not Sociedad Deportiva Huesca, etc etc, so it should be C.F. União de Lamas, the full name would appear in box/intro; 2 - this is the ENGLISH WP, so the season articles should be in English (2011/12 SECOND DIVISION, etc), but since i see there is stuff like "2011/12 LA LIGA" or "2010/11 SERIE B" already, obviously i am the minority so you can do it in the way you proposed, i don't think you will have any problems whatsoever; 3 - similar to "2", i think it should be BEJA FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION, in English (example, you have Royal Spanish Football Federation, not REAL FEDERACIÓN ESPAÑOLA DE FÚTBOL.

Kind regards as well, keep it up - --Vasco Amaral (talk) 14:07, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Vasco and Secretaria

I will use the following to present to WP:FOOTY:

1. There seem to be 3 approaches used in English Wikipedia for club article titles

Full Title

Category:Football clubs in Brazil - 724 clubs listed!
Category:Football clubs in Argentina

Abbreviated title - without dots

Category:Football clubs in Spain
Category:Football clubs in France

Abbreviated title - with dots

Category:Football clubs in Italy
Category:Football clubs in Portugal

I would prefer to use the "full title" but my second option would be "abbreviated title - without dots". The option we currently use for Portugal "abbreviated title - with dots" looks very "gappy" and I do not favour it.

In Portuguese Wikipedia clubs are listed with their full title. Refer - Categoria:Clubes de futebol de Portugal

2. Portuguese names should be used as mirrored by the main sources:

Segunda Divisão / II Divisão

Soccerway - http://uk.soccerway.com/national/portugal/ii-divisao/2011-2012/promotion-group/
RSSSF - Third Level 2007/08 - http://www.rsssf.com/tablesp/port08.html

Soccer Library - http://soccerlibrary.free.fr/por_ft.pdf
ForaDeJogo (English version) - http://www.foradejogo.net/competitionsnew.php?&language=2

Portuguese Third Division / Division Three

None found to date.

3. Portuguese District Football Associations are all found with Portuguese titles e.g.

Associação de Futebol de Aveiro / AF Aveiro

http://www.afaveiro.pt/
http://www.zerozero.pt/associacao.php?id=7
http://www.footballzz.co.uk/associacao.php?id=7 (ZeroZero English version)
http://www.foradejogo.net/teamsaf.php?af=6 (ForaDeJogo English version)

There are no English titles which suggests we should not be inventing one especially for Wikipedia.

  • Talk about a difficult problem man! I've never heard of this team and, since the links you sent me are both from 2011/12 (hence there was no name change involved), i really don't know, wish i could help :( - --Vasco Amaral (talk) 14:42, 24 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
In the ZEROZERO link however, there is an e-mail that people can write to, maybe this'll help? --Vasco Amaral (talk) 14:44, 24 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker)I feel that these changes are too big too read about and not comment on: I'd say use the abbreviated title, but feel free to leave the dots out. There is no need to use the full official name, the best thing would simply be to use the COMMONNAME, but as many of those are ambigous there should be some consistency (e.g. abbreviated club name). I must admit that when I read an article about a Portuguese/Spanish-speaking club (especially in South-America) with the full name as article-title I get confused what is their real (common) name. But as I've said before when we talked about Finnish football: I'm all for foreign-language (in this case, Portuguese) league-titles. Mentoz86 (talk) 19:59, 26 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your helpful comments Mentoz86. At the moment I am waiting for the views of Secretaria who is the prime mover in Portuguese football. I am not sure what is the best way forward on club titles and need to think the issue through more clearly. The additional problem that I have identified is that there can be several different versions of the abbreviated name for example Associação Cultural e Recreativa Alvorense 1º Dezembro can be known as:

  • ACR Alvorense 1 Dezembro
  • ACRA 1 Dezembro
  • ACR Alvorense
  • Alvorense

Then one key source ForaDeJogo still uses their old name Grupo Desportivo Recreativo Alvorense so we can add

  • GDR Alvorense
  • GD Alvorense

Hi man, how's everything?

please, when you insert the IMORTAL DC name in the infoboxes, please make sure to only write IMORTAL, full name for storyline OK? Thanks.

By the way, i see SECRETARIA has not replied yet, i am not surprised, did not reply any of my past messages either. Regards - --Vasco Amaral (talk) 21:18, 29 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about that Vasco. I will be more careful with the infobox insertions in future. By the way if you have any famous Portuguese players without an article for clubs that they have played for say early or late in their careers then let me know and I will prepare one for you. If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Bela-Vista (football club), requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as at articles for deletion. Under the specified criteria, where an article has substantially identical content to that of an article deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Kosm1fent 09:09, 1 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Club Notability in England - need for a proper policy re FA Vase

There was no need to start that discussion - it's been long established that playing in the FA Vase is sufficient for an article. Number 57 19:56, 2 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there OCTOPUS, VASCO here,

if you want, go to WP:FOOTY and say that these are definite candidates for AfD (stands for "articles for deletion"), someone will add the template to the article in a matter of minutes/hours, and it eventually will be deleted.

Greek stadia

[edit]

Here you can see articles and photos of every Superleague/Football League/FL 2 stadium. The "Other important stadia" section features some important stadia of Delta Ethniki teams of lower, and there is a link with photos of minor stadiums of more Delta Ethniki and lower teams. Cheers. Kosm1fent 15:16, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Generally speaking, stadia in big towns are relatively in good condition. That's not a norm though. Some Delta Ethniki stadia are pretty well maintained (Prosotsani Stadium for example). While there are stadiums like this or this which used to host Superleague matches up until very recently and they are just a matter of vomiting, eating the puke, and re-vomiting. Cheers. 1930 Mestaruussarja

[edit]

Hey,

I decided to tackle upon my first article in my comeback and that is 1930 Mestaruussarja. I never done anything in Finnish Football before and I thought I would like to help make it better. I tried to follow the templates for a usual league season, but I had a difficult time trying to do the teams and stadium section along with the map too! So I decided to give up and added more info from RSSSF which I noticed that in 1930 season, HIFK and TPS Turku are tied and the RSSSF said that they played an tiebreaker match (or replay match) and HIFK won the match. So I added the asterisk to the standings with an explanation below the standings. Let me know what you think of? I plan to begin on 1931 season tomorrow. Rakuten06 (talk) 01:35, 6 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the recommendation, I appreciate it very much. I'll add the Participating Clubs section to it. I was thinking of a table with club and home city, but it's hard because the template also asks for a home stadia. But I'll borrow your template in 2001 League season and use it on 1930 Mestaruussarja. I liked the map of 1920-1940 Finland. I wish we can use that to show where it is. Rakuten06 (talk) 11:54, 6 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I liked the map and I did try to tweak some of the teams' position in the map, so it will look better. If you don't like it, then you can try to change some of it again. Also I created an article of 1930 Mestaruussarja's top goalscorer Holger Salin so I would appreciate it if you can try to review it and make sure it looks good. Also it contains the sources I think you may have access to it. Rakuten06 (talk) 15:35, 6 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the articles in the Sports Musuems of Finland, but unfortunately, I don't know Finnish at all. So it's very tricky for me anyway. GiantSnowman did a great job on Holger Salin article, added a better infobox and cleaned up the article very well! Maybe I can use the Salin article as a template to know what it looks like anyway. I'll get started on the Mestaruussarja seasons of 1931, 1932, and 1933. Rakuten06 (talk) 12:37, 7 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, oh well. I can try to read it slow one by one sentence with the use of GoogleTranslate. who knows maybe I can translate it into English by writing it down! I noticed the first article you sent me (1907-1935) only started with 1933, not in 1930-1932. Is that an issue and also I can't access other articles via Football Museum of Finland link, it won't allow me into. Meanwhile, I finished 1931 Mestaruussarja with major changes to the infobox, participating clubs, and the map. I'll keep going with the 1930s Mestaruussarja :) Rakuten06 (talk) 13:47, 7 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Couple of things

[edit]

Hi, I've archived the AfD of Durham Flames at WP:FOOTBALL and have tidied up the Salin article, adding a better infobox and some more sources to make it more appropriate. Thanks, GiantSnowman 10:25, 7 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the Slovakian club PRODs - I'm not going to take to AfD, at least not until we've agreed a new notability for clubs, but others might. Regarding the table, I will take a look wgen I can but to be honest I am more concerned with, and active in, player notability rather than clubs. Nonetheless I will help where I can. Regarding the cup, look at the article then - no sources, no meaningful content. I've explained to the editor today about notability and references, let's see if he taked any notice - but he's been around for 15 months, so I'm not sure. Regarding club notability, very good work, give me a shout when it's finished and I'll take a proper look. GiantSnowman 20:42, 23 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for delay in getting back. If the editor cannot be bothered to upgrade the article then deletion process should follow. On reflection the article should have remained in the editor's sandbox until proper content and sources were available. League Octopus (League Octopus 17:33, 25 July 2012 (UTC))[reply]

Finland

[edit]

Hi,

I wonder if you’re still planning to come to Finland in the near future.

I went to the museum the other day, and saw Vesa Tikander. He said that he’s going to be at work thru the Olympics, and after that he’ll have his vacation (probably 4–5 weeks). I did mention you to him, but not much more.

With Markku Kasila I haven’t been in touch, so I don’t know about his plans.

I don’t know if we had our discourse before or after you’ve created various Mestaruussarja articles, but I just looked at a few of them, and I thought I’d mention the following to you:

Mestaruussarja translates into English as ‘Championship Series’. I don’t really know what kind of things the word series evokes in a British mind, but in the titles of the articles, instead of the word league I would use the word series. E.g. 1930 Mestaruussarja — Finnish Championship Series.

The idea of a league, or the of a league, was very much a foreign one in Finland, associated with the English Football League, the Bundesliga, the NHL, etc, until the mid-1970’s, when the SM-liiga was founded. I think the football people were quite slow to follow (i.e. 1990).

If you think of the English Football League, before they came into existence, there was only the FA. The the league was founded, independent of the FA. So somehow it seems to me that the concept of a league might entail that they are not within the jurisdiction of the FA of a given country, and they are an independent organisation.

But in Finland, the local FA did run the Mestaruussarja, I think, until the Futisliiga was formed. So you might say that the concept of a league is only applicable to Finnish top flight football after that. But I think Vesa would be able to give you definite answers on this one. Apanuggpak (talk) 18:54, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I was surprised to hear you’re already over here. It would be nice to meet with you if/when you are in Helsinki. We could do it at the museum or some other location. You can give me a call or send an SMS, 040–769 2606. I live near where the motorway to Turku begins. I’ll try to see if I can get a hold of Markku Kasila.
Apanuggpak (talk) 15:33, 27 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again, I tried to look for a phone number for Markku Kasila, but our internet resources yielded nothing. I wrote him via e-mail, and hope he will answer. Patrick Lees, whom I mentioned to you in March, seems to play next on Aug. 7 (Honka’s team in Kolmonen, they appear to have teams on many different tiers), at one of the pitches of Töölön pallokenttä, next to the Olympic Stadium. Yours sincerely, Apanuggpak (talk) 16:33, 27 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK. There seem to be no matches in Veikkausliiga in the Helsinki area on Sunday Aug 5th, Haka and KuPS have home matches on that day, HJK the day before (Sat), TPS on Monday. So if you want to see a match in the Helsinki area on the 5th, it would have to be a lower tier match. But you have my contact info above. I keep my phone on silent mode most of the time, but I can call you back if I notice an incoming call I’ve missed. I think it would be cheaper for you also just to answer your phone abroad.

Suomensarja

[edit]

Hi,

Looking at your recent contributions I noticed noticed there was no article called Suomensarja, so I created it, the text being a translation from Finnish.

Right after I saved it, I realised that I could have deliberated on the heading a bit more, but I guess you can have a look at it and perhaps change it, as you see fit.

I suppose there might be some articles in this field that would need to be created. I guess I could do it, provided they would not be too long ones.

Your sincerely, Apanuggpak (talk) 22:22, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there OCTOPUS, AL from Portugal here,

have you had some kind of reply from this user yet? It's getting very frustrating, i have told him time and time again, through summaries and personal messages, that RUNNER-UP are not correct honours in DOMESTIC LEAGUES, only for DOMESTIC CUPS and NATIONAL TEAM stuff.

Apparently he says "talk to the hand". If you have already had some kind of interaction with him (i doubt it!), could you please mediate?

Have a nice week, keep it up --AL (talk) 02:04, 20 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Good work on User:League Octopus/Club Notability Tables (and Test). Just a couple of things re Australia. You probably need to list Australian Cup (soccer) and the NSL Cup. Hi there LO, AL here,

even if this club reached the third round in the Taça de Portugal, that DOES NOT confer notability, unless BOTH teams playing a game in the competition are in the professional level. Even if Mem Martins faced Guimarães, Setúbal, Gil Vicente, or even Porto, Benfica or Sporting, it's irrelevant.

Regards from Portugal - --AL (talk) 16:04, 31 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Nice to hear from you AL. Mem Martins Sport Clube is a very interesting one and well worth taking to AfD but at the moment it has not been moved from PROD to AfD status. I am particularly intrigued by your comments that "reaching this or that round in the domestic cup does not confer notability" and "DOES NOT confer notability, unless BOTH teams playing a game in the competition are in the professional level". I am not sure if you have read my essay on Club Notability at WP:NCLUB - there you will see a rather different interpretation on Club Notability. Keep in touch. Hi, I checked article Cheil Industries FC. You imporved some articles regard south korean defuct football clubs. Thanks a lot. Actually, I created many south korean football clubs which was south korean football champions prio to Professial League. But my articles are deleted by wikipedia controller. Especailly, American wikipedia controller, They don't understand football club article. Deletion reason was south korea football club's notibility and article was too short. But They didn't delete defucnt american football team article. If you check [[Category:Defunct American football teams],There are many american football temas article which also don't have notibility and too short Anyways, My english was poor. So I coundn't expand my article. I saved many south korean football club articles that deleted. Can you impove this article like Cheil Industries FC If I don't expand, Maybe wikipedia controller must delete again. If you have spare time, please impove my article and created on English wikipedia. This clubs are very important of South korean football histoy. Hi there. Just found out that you copy-paste-moved Syrianska Botkyrka IF to Arameiska-Syrianska Botkyrka IF in September 2010. Lists of players

Personally I would remove them, tagging is also acceptable. If it has been tagged for a reasonable time with no improvement it should then be deleted. GiantSnowman 13:28, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi League Octopus. Saw your comments about my edits before I saw GS's response here and left my opinion at his talk page if you are interested. Fenix down (talk) 16:02, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi LO, I'm sorry but you simply aren't addressing the problem by adding the criterion, here are a list of players who have played in a FPL. That is the same as saying here is a list of players with WP articles and there is no consensus at WT:FOOTY that this is appropriate. How would you apply this critierion to a club that is already in an FPL. Additionally, your edit here was incorrect. Of the players on the list, the player articles indicate as far as I could see that only the Russian player has played in an FPL. The others all appear only to have played in the second teir in Finland or below. Fenix down (talk) 12:33, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Additionally, your edit here is also not very helpful. Firstly, there is no evidence in the player articles that Vuorinen, Timoska or Slawuta ever played for the club according to their own articles. Additionally, Sumiala appears to have played once. How could he possible be considered a notable player for MuSa. Fenix down (talk) 12:39, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Furthermore, your edit here includes in the list one player who only ever was part of the youth setup and another for whom there is no indication that they ever actually played a first team game, though you would get the impression these are the two most notable players at the club from the list. It is very difficult to see how these players can be seen to be notable players for Pargas. In this example and the one above it seems much more sensible that if attention must be drawn to players no longer at the club that it is done through a link to a category rather than a list. Fenix down (talk) 12:44, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to bombard you with messages, this is the last one I promise! However, your edit here is also incorrect. A quick look at the articles for Waddle and Miller would reveal no evidence to assert any association with the club whatsoever. Again, issues like this could be resolved whilst maintaining the ability for readers to see former player articles merely by replacing the list with a category link. Can I ask that we discuss this please before removing any other tags? Fenix down (talk) 12:49, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Stats versus encyclopedia

[edit]

Hi LO. I have to say I am disappointed by your recent discussion of leaving the project. You are a really interested contributor with a lot to offer the project and the world as a whole. However there seems to be some incompatibility with your idea of building a knowledge base, and the Wikipedia motto (the free encyclopedia[sic]). I'm sure league tables have been published year on year for many leagues around the world, including semi-pro and amateur status leagues. However this level of coverage is not sufficient according to Wikipedia's own policies for encyclopaedic articles, especially when there is no prose in an article. My opinion is that the mass presence of stats-only season articles goes against Wikipedia's main goal, and that reliably sourced prose should be present in all articles which are not lists.

The 1992–93 Tercera Division happened, there is no doubt. However, there is no automatic presumption of notability, and nobody is apparently prepared to establish any, so I cannot see any other conclusion than the articles being deleted. I am surprised you claimed this would "destroy such good work" as the stats are evidently already available on the internet and limited if any work goes into verbatim copy-pasting stats from one webpage to another. I do hope you will continue to add high quality material to articles in general, but I hope you can agree with me that there is a total absence of any such material in any of the articles under current discussion. You should not take this personally.

My aim as an editor is always to make my most significant contributions in articles which I believe have a rock-solid chance of not being deleted, e.g. established national team players, and certainly not when there are no reliable sources or potential reliable sources to support notability. I do gnome work across the board, but hate to see editors time go to waste, hence why I would rather see these articles deleted now in their unaltered copy-paste state than further on down the line when somebody's hard work has gone into them. Regarding Uganda, I have seen your Football in Uganda article - great job! I have added the WikiProject Football banner to it, so members of the project can track it now. It would be a shame to stop work on Uganda just because of the AfD of amateur Spanish season articles, but it's your choice to make. I hope it will be the right one for you. Thanks, C679 19:36, 24 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The article Karlslunds IF HFK‎ has been proposed for deletion. The proposed deletion notice added to the article should explain why.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
