Kategorien und Subpages

[edit]

Hi,

--Magnus Manske 18:15, Jun 20, 2004 (UTC)

Thank you for your contribution to one, or more, articles that are now organized under Data management.

Because of your previous intrest, you are recieving an invitation to become a founding member of the Data Management Wiki Committee.

The members, of course, will form and solidify the purpose, rules, officers, etc. but my idea (to kick things off) is to establish a group of us who will take responsiblity to see that the ideas of Data management are promoted and well represented in Wikipedia articles.

If you are willing to join the committee, please go to Category_talk:Data_management and indicate your acceptance of this invitation by placing your three tilde characters in the list.

Hi! Did you ever finish that English langauge paper on you research? Andicat 13:11, 20 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I attended your visualization session at Wikimania. I'm starting to work through some of the the things you presented. I was wondering if you would be willing to share some of your python scripts for processing the XML dumps? I would mainly like an example that I could learn from. Thank you! I can see from the talk pages that there was some effort to get rid of WP:DSS, which is a clear copyvio, and that you were involved in it to some extent. However, the main page and all its subpages still remain. Now, there is a curious "copyright notice" on the the main page (Wikipedia:Dewey Decimal System) which proclaims that pre-1923 of the Dewey Decimal System are public domain, and a link to the current copyright holder which proclaims that a licence is required. However, the page itself says it is based on the 2003 system, not a pre-1923 system. There is a legal precedent cited about recipes in a cookbook, which, my law degree tells me, sounds like it is being cited out of desperation rather than clear legal argument. Further, it seems odd to me that the page talks about pre-1923 being copyright-free when it admits to actually using the 2003 system. I am tempted to try to get this deleted as a copyvio but I want to find out why the last effort to do so failed - I can find no trace of why it failed on the talk pages, just some messages agreeing that it should be deleted! Can you remember what happened that meant this got kept? TheGrappler 17:42, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm more used to the German Wikipedia where we delete copyvios very strictly. Maybe in the English Wikipedia people tolerate the use of non-free material - you can argue alot that DDC is "only a bit non-free" and OCLC will probably tolerate it's usage in Wikipedia but sue other users (see Dewey_Decimal_Classification#Ownership). It's a pitty that other users tend to tolerate non-free material because this way there is no need to create free knowledge or free the existing. --

WorldCat Identities

Thanks for your mention of WorldCat Identities on Wikimetrics. I'm not very sanguine that en:Wikipedia will look happily on systematically adding external links as de:Wikipedia did to PND: it falls foul of many editors' anti-spam instincts (e.g. here and here). Do you have any idea when VIAF is likely to be up and running? Dsp13 20:53, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bibliogram

[edit]

Could a bibliogram or similar measurement be done on Wikipedia? For instance, if the various contributions of individual editors were indexed and analyzed it might yield an interesting description of the quality of edits and editors.—joeFriday— {talk}  01:27, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have done such measures in my masters thesis (confirming among other results Lotka's law) but quantitative analysis is a vague ground for qualitative assumptions. -- Nichtich 09:22, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

List of speakers at Wizards of OS

[edit]

A {{prod}} template has been added to the article List of speakers at Wizards of OS, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice explains why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you endorse deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of the page. AfD, VfD and other cryptic machine-talk

[edit]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
