An exciting month of wiki events!

[edit]

Hello there,

I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.

The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.

There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

All the best,
James Hare

CFB rivalries

[edit]

Hey, P12. We are contemplating a selective purge of several non-notable CFB "rivalries" currently included in Category:College football rivalries in the United States. Would you mind sharing your observations regarding any you see as likely to be non-notable per WP:NRIVALRY and WP:GNG with me via email? Please note that there are several recently added SEC "rivalries," too. Thanks. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 02:54, 1 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hey, P12. Thanks for your quick participation in today's AfDs. It's time for a little follow-up on point . . . Could you take a look a the SEC rivalry navbox (at the bottom of any SEC team's rivalry articles), and tell me what you think about the various "rivalries" listed? For starters, I would be curious to get your Bama perspective on the newly created Bama-MSU rivalry article, but also your general reaction to other SEC "rivalries" like Georgia-Vanderbilt, Kentucky-Vandebilt, LSU-MSU, Mizzou-Texas A&M, and a critical eye on some of the lesser match-ups of our new friends from Big 12(-2) . . . Mizzou-Illinois--seriously? As always, your input is greatly appreciated. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 23:58, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • P12, can I get your reaction whether the following SEC games are appropriate for stand-alone Wikipedia articles?

Thanks. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 14:41, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • You're thinking on point is similar to my own. Discussion of the overwhelming majority of rivalry and closely decided single games deserves to be included in the main team, rivalry and season articles for the respective teams. Only truly exceptional regular season games should have stand-alone articles. (And I think the 2011 Bama-LSU game qualifies.) I plan to raise this issue on the WP:CFB talk page in the next several days as a prelude to AfD. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 11:48, 20 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Next round of proposed CFB "rivalry" articles for AfD review

Stand-alone articles for regular season CFB games -- what's appropriate?

[edit]

Hey, P12, when you have some time, can you take a look at the games listed in Category:College football games? Can you critically review the games added since 2000, and the Bama games in particular? Another editor and I have nominated 16 regular season game articles for AfD in the last 48 hours, but I believe there are probably at least another ten post-1999 game articles that should be sent to AfD, too. Please let me know what you think. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 15:39, 8 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Curry birthday

[edit]

In a weird coincidence, I've run across two women's basketball coaches today whose reported birthday in the article about them is one day off from the birthday reported by the NCAA. What makes it odder is that you used the NCAA database to make the edit]. However when I look at the database I see October 30, 1966.

You think I'm missing something?--S Philbrick(Talk) 22:36, 17 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sonja Hogg birthdate

[edit]

In this edit you added a birthdate of December 19, 1945 for Sonja Hogg. I checked the NCAA database which list December 20, 1945 as her birthdate. This is the fifth correction I've made the last couple weeks; in each case the birthdate is off by one day. You know which source you use to check the birthdate? If it was the NCAA site I'm going to check with them to see if they had an error in the system which would explain the large number of errors.

If you obtained it from some other source could you identify it so I could check on the chance that the NCAA database is incorrect?--S Philbrick(Talk) 19:58, 26 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I am writing information for the 1984 season now and will try to get it posted soon. Also other years as well. Thanks again for the work. MDSanker 06:17, 10 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Birmingham Legion FC

[edit]

Hello Patriarca12,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Birmingham Legion FC for deletion, because it seems to be promotional, rather than an encyclopedia article.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions.

2019 US Banknote Contest

[edit]
US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here

College football season articles

[edit]

Patriarca12, good to see you back in the mix with college football articles. Thanks for picking up the "clean" up-to-date formatting for the infobox on those New Mexico State articles. I've been trying to slowly convert things over to this where I can. As for missing season articles, we could use some help filling in the blacks in the 1919–1957-ish era per this discussion. Thanks and happy holidays, Jweiss11 (talk) 19:04, 19 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 19:54, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Two Irving Mondscheins!

[edit]

Patriarca12, nice work on the CCNY articles. Check out my additions to 1950 CCNY Beavers football team. Seems there were two Irving Mondscheins, both nicknamed "Moon". Wow, that's not confusing! Irving Mondschein was born in 1924 and was at NYU in the mid-to-late 1940s. The CCNY Mondschein was born around 1912 and graduated from CCNY in 1933. How you think we should disambiguate these two? Jweiss11 (talk) 02:45, 20 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Bonkers there are two of these gentlemen with this as the same name! I think Irving Mondschein needs to be left as is per WP:PTOPIC given the second Mondschein was not realized until today. The CCNY Mondschein could then potentially be Irving Mondschein (American football). I will ultimately defer to you on this though. Patriarca12 (talk) 03:22, 20 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
