i was only pasing by Beijing

[edit]

I was only editing the external links on several important cities, to kill some linkspam of tourist guides, and Beijing happened to be on my list. I noticed that the Beijing article was in perfect health on that matter and way more complete than other articles, and tried to use it as guide for other cities for a while. Thanks for the offer, anyways. Cheers and good luck for your invitations --Enric Naval (talk) 20:18, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiproject Beijing

[edit]

I get a lot of requests to join projects; for example, recently I was asked to join Wikiproject History of Technology due to my featured article Technology of the Song Dynasty appearing on the main page. However, I have to be honest with you in admitting that the Wikiprojects that I am already a member of get little help from me on their desired and official designated articles for improvement. I tend to enjoy a loose relationship with editors here, editing what I want when I want, and not being given a set schedule, curriculum, or (gasp!) someone else's homework. Your project sounds fun, but my goal here is to improve history articles, and I'm afraid that's the field I limit my edits to. I only added pictures to Beijing and the article History of Beijing.

Although I respectfully decline your offer, I grant you the best of luck in finding members for your project.--Pericles of AthensTalk 01:29, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You recently warned this user about his consistent spamming. He still hasn't stopped. Could you maybe take a look at the situation again? Thanks, Grsz11 17:25, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please post some specific diffs, I can't see anything to bad. Poeloq (talk) 17:32, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's the fact that he keeps adding the same, blatantly POV edits again and again and again. He's been warned about the policy violations he's breaking (UNDUE, OR, NPOV), and refused to yield, let alone talk about it. Grsz11 17:48, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm too unfamiliar with the pages in question to be able to judge it properly. I can only recommend to try and discuss it with him or post some very obvious diffs to me (I currently don't have the time to go through all his contribs, some of which are ok). Thanks, that was quick! Abecedare (talk) 23:32, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, checked my watchlist and saw your request. Your count is very good, no blocks and no edit warring. So no problems --> quick process :) Poeloq (talk) 23:34, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey KTC! I'm sure you had good intentions, but a quick search would have revealed that Sufiah Yusof did attend SOAS - it's been all over the news in the last few days. Poeloq (talk) 23:40, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I see now. The references (newspaper articles) on Sufiah page that I read only said she is studying in London, didn't specifically mentioned SOAS. I'll learn to actually google first next time... KTC (talk) 23:51, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No problem! Keep up the good work, Poeloq (talk) 00:08, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I forgot to check back, even though you said on the top of your talk page to check back.

Anyway, some good sites for Chinese music are:

  • music.yahoo.cn - you must be able to read Chinese to understand this
  • sina.cn - a news site, but does have some things about music in China
  • wiki.theppn.org - a Wiki, focuses on all types of Asian music
  • wiki.rockinchina.com - mainly rock music though

Nice to meet you yesterday, Poeloq

[edit]

The author I referred to was Barbara Pym. It says on Wikipedia that she worked at the African Institute, but I am sure she refers to SOAS. I think you would like her books- I first came across her through hearing Quartet in Autumn on Book at Bedtime. I then read Excellent Women and finally Jane and Prudence (on which I started the Wikipedia article). These books will make a good antidote to your exam revision. Or Wikipedia:Meetup/London 10, June 8th? Actually I was hoping you'd be able to help out with promoting it this time, because despite me setting it up, it looks like I may not be able to make it on June 8th myself :-( ...but I would like it if we kept momentum going for monthly events (I set it up for the same time and same place for this reason)
Hope exams are going well!

A warm hello to all those signed up as guarantor members of the soon-to-be-rebooted UK chapter! Voting is now open over at meta - there's tons of information online over there, and the mailing list has been very active too. Discussion, comment (and even the inevitable technical gremlins!) are most welcome at the meta pages, otherwise please do send in your vote/s, and tell a friend about the chapter too :-) Privatemusings (talk) 22:30, 20 September 2008 (UTC)I'm not actually involved in the election workings, and am just dropping these notes in to help try and spread the word :-) I welcome any or all comment too, but 'election related' stuff really is better suited to the meta pages :-)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Dizzee Rascal - Pussyole.ogg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Dizzee Rascal - Pussyole.ogg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:17, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia UK v2.0

[edit]

Hello! Thanks for showing an interest in Wikimedia UK v2.0. Formation of the company is currently underway under the official name "Wiki UK Limited", and we are hoping to start accepting membership in the near future. We have been drawing up a set of membership guidelines, determining what membership levels we'll have (we plan on starting off with just standard Membership, formerly known as Guarantor Membership, with supporting membership / friends scheme coming later), who can apply for membership (everyone), what information we'll collect on the application form, why applications may be rejected, and data retention. Your input on all of this would be appreciated. We're especially after the community's thoughts on what the membership fee should be. Please leave a message on the talk page with your thoughts.

Also, we're currently setting up a monthly newsletter to keep everyone informed about the to-be-Chapter's progress. If you would like to receive this newsletter, please put your username down on this page.

Thanks again. Mike Peel (talk) 19:55, 8 November 2008 (UTC) (Membership Secretary, Wikimedia UK [Proposed])[reply]

Wiki UK Ltd Membership applications now invited!

[edit]

Hello,

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Wiki UK Limited is now inviting membership applications! You can download the application form in PDF format from meta:Image:Wiki_UK_Ltd_membership_application_form.pdf

Information is given on the form about membership fees (£12/year standard, £6 for concessions); these need to be paid by cheque initially, although we hope to accept other forms of payment in the future. Applications should be submitted to me at the address given on the form. If you have any queries about the application process, please let me know.

We will formally start accepting members once we have a bank account, as we cannot process membership fees until that time. We will be submitting our application for a bank account in the very near future, and we hope to have this set up by the end of December at the latest.

Thank you for your support so far; I look forward to receiving your membership application.

Unreferenced BLPs

[edit]

Hello Poeloq! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. Please note that all biographies of living persons must be sourced. If you were to add reliable, secondary sources to this article, it would greatly help us with the current 403 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:

Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

[edit]

Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in over one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e., as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised and that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions). This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on User:Jeffmitchum, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which articles can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may be soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:

  • It appears to be a clear copyright infringement. (See section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. However, even if you use one of these processes to release copyrighted material to Wikipedia, it still needs to comply with the other policies and guidelines to be eligible for inclusion. If you would like any assistance with this, you can ask a question at the help desk.

  • It appears to consist of writings, information, discussions, and/or activities not closely related to Wikipedia's goals. Please note that Wikipedia is not a free Web hosting service. (See section U5 of the criteria for speedy deletion.)

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:16, 21 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
