Welcome novice

[edit]

Hello Raker! It's good to have you on the team. If you need any help, just drop a message on my talk page. As I am sure you are aware, there are many rules in place that keep Wikipedia resourceful, useable and reliable. Familiarise yourself with The five pillars of Wikipedia!

As a final word of wisdom for you, always remember, “in literature the ambition of the novice is to acquire the literary language: the struggle of the adept is to get rid of it.” --TheEditor20 13:57, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

University-preparatory?

[edit]

Hi Raker, could you explain what is meant by Category:University-preparatory schools in South Africa? Does it imply private, and if so, are former Model C schools included or excluded? It's not a term that I've heard before. I see the category was first created by a Canadian. I'm worried that it's an international term that isn't used in South Africa, or is only subjective in South Africa, unless there is a defined group of schools which are not able to prepare pupils for university. Re: Bishops Student/ Teacher ratio

[edit]

Hi

I understand your concern. The {{fact}} tag simply shows that we need a source. 1:15 looks like a thumbsuck without proof. Anyway, that calculation needs to take two things into account:

  • Number of teachers - i.e. does that include prep and what about non-academic staff?
  • Number of students - this may matter in case of prep

Therefore, the value you gave is not wrong - it probably included non-academic staff. It should suffice. Look at Hotchkiss School, which has a ration of 1:5.

Anyway, that list may prove a valid source. Simply use the <ref> ... </ref> format to reference it properly.

Cheers

Image Tagging for Image:Stithian_badge.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Stithian_badge.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Just a note

[edit]

I note many of your very valuable contributions to Wikipedia. However, please consider the following:

  • Please do not remove warnings from your talk page or replace them with offensive content. Removing or maliciously altering warnings from your talk page will not remove them from the page history. If you continue to remove or vandalize warnings from your talk page, you will lose your privilege of editing your talk page. Thanks. - rather type under the message something like: "sorted ~~~~" or "erronously marked by bot" , etc.
  • When uploading images which are school logos, use {{PreK12-logo}} instead. I have tried to correct most; remember that if someone comes accross an incorrectly used GFDL license, the image will be nominated for a speedy delete.
  • Thanks for all your valued contributions. See Wikipedia:WikiProject_Education_in_South_Africa as well.

More Image Problems

[edit]

In addition to my concerns as per above, I have checked your log and all the many pictures uploaded. Please rectify the GFDL problem. Also these images have not got sources, and so were listed for deletion in a week's time:

Image Tagging Image:Stjcollege.jpg

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Stjcollege.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Thomas More College

[edit]

Hi Raker,

Woolleyback is an account of a group of past pupils from Thomas More College. When saw that there was hardly anything on our school on wikipedia, we decided that we would make thomas more college one of our priorities.....

We want to continuously add information to this site untill it becomes as big as some of the other sites on private schools such as Kearsney, Kloof High, and many others....

We are glad that we are not the only ones making contributions to the thomas more college site as we dont want to seem selfish towards this site since you created it and WE REALLY WANT input from others!!!!!!!!

We have noticed that you seem very involved in the sites of many schools in KZN... and we admire that you are contributing to so many sites.... so we are really happy to see you working on this site. But we were confused to why the site was reverted back, and we lost a lot of work and research on academics....

We arent a bunch of bullies looking for trouble.... we are patriotic Thomas More ex-pupils who want the world to see thomas more as we see it as we do....

We would like to ask, just a reason why the page was reverted back... and secondly, maybe some advice on how to improve the thomas more site...

Many thanx.... The WoolleyBack Group

Image Tagging for Image:Pietermaritzburgarms.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Pietermaritzburgarms.jpg. However, the copyright tag you've used is deprecated or obsolete, and should not be used. This could be because the tag is inaccurate or misleading, or because it does not adequately specify the copyright status of the image. For a list of copyright tags that are in current use, see the "Public domain", "Free license", and "Fair use" sections of Wikipedia:Image copyright tags.

St John's College

[edit]

Hi Raker,

What is the reason for reverting my change to the St John's page? Thanks

Coldcam

I think it may be a good idea. The problem that one will need to overcome is that of proportionality - i.e. the culture section is rather big, whereas academics, etc. is signfiicantly smaller. If we want to merge it back in, we may want to take another look at cutting culture, etc. down and improving the rest of the article. -- Chris Lester talk 07:04, 2 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

User:Pure Oxygen is not all that happy with the removal of the table. See here: Talk:Diocesan College. You may want to monitor this page for further feedback and to see if someone puts it back. Maybe one should hang on a bit with regards to doing the full merge - just in case something pops up. I am happy to support you in whatever you do. -- Chris Lester talk 23:49, 2 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sure - that's fine. Let's get rid of the category (Diocesan College). -- Chris Lester talk 22:23, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Template:WCSchools

[edit]

I thought I'd just leave a note about a change I made - I changed "Public schools" to "State schools" to avoid confusion, given the alternative meanings of the term in different parts of the world. I hope this is fine. -- Chris Lester talk 13:47, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bishops redirect

[edit]

Nope -- no discussion re the issue. [2] is about how far it goes. Someone did take it upon himself/herself to change it. Logically one would think that Bishops is unique to the school and that no person would search an encyclopedia by using the plural of a word (that's why we'll find children under the entry for child in most cases). On that basis we would revert his change; though, it may be worth a discussion to prevent this coming up again.-- Chris Lester talk 13:12, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bethany School, Goudhurst

[edit]

Excuse me Raker, but what makes you think that you have the rule over what is said on this page? I know a lot about that school and the information I have put would be confirmed to be true by the majority of pupils and parents of pupils at Bethany School. This is free speech, and I am sure you are aware that you are a minority in deciding that my information is incorrect. If you want an edit war then I will comply, but if your not as arrogant as you are ignorant then perhaps we can discuss it. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 194.177.166.118 (talk) 11:22, 23 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Elite Seven

[edit]

Hi Raker. I'm curious as to which source you used when creating the Elite Seven article, as I am unable to find any online links that reference the term except for Wikipedia and its mirrors. Naturally, this is making it somewhat difficult to prevent those adding or removing schools from the list, since there is no authoritative source to reference it against. Do you perhaps have a link to one that does? Thanks, — Impi 13:54, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Fram crest.gif

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Fram crest.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Unspecified source for Image:Fram crest.gif

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Fram crest.gif. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self-no-disclaimers}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 21:26, 17 May 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 21:26, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Hillcrest Christian Academy, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag) and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Groupthink 13:03, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Herschel badge.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 05:45, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Template:Kearsney college infobox requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it is substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{tranclusionless}}</noinclude>).

Fair use rationale for Image:Ieb logo.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Ieb logo.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use.

Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Project FMF (talk) 00:16, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Thomasmore badge.gif)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Thomasmore badge.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Image source problem with Image:Heritage hillcrest.jpg

[edit]
Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Heritage hillcrest.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 05:20, 2 December 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Mosmof (talk) 05:20, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image permission problem with Image:Kloof gorge.jpg

[edit]
Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Kloof gorge.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the image (or other media file) agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to [email protected], stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the image to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the image has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to [email protected].

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the image's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Images lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Mosmof (talk) 05:21, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. Unreferenced BLPs

[edit]

Hello Raker! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 2 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. if you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 451 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

AfD nomination of Elite Seven

[edit]

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Elite Seven. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Elite Seven. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:18, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article Cowan House has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Article has been here since 2006 and still has no references. It is written as an ad (in first person).

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Invitation to an in-person meetup in Mohua / Golden Bay

[edit]
Golden Bay Air are holding some seats for us until 21 November

Thinking about your summer break? Think about joining other Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Golden Bay / Mohua! Details are on the meetup page. There's heaps of interesting stuff to work on e.g. the oldest extant waka or New Zealand's oldest ongoing legal case. Or you may spend your time taking photos and then upload them.

Golden Bay is hard to get to and the airline flying into Tākaka uses small planes, so we are holding some seats from and to Wellington and we are offering attendees a $200 travel subsidy to help with costs.

Be in touch with Schwede66 if this event interests you and you'd like to discuss logistics. Schwede66 09:14, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
