Assyrian self name

[edit]

Hello, Shmayo!

The original self-designation of the Assyrians is "ܐܵܫܘܿܪ̈ܵܝܹܐ⁩ (āšōrāyē)" From Akkadian 𒀾𒋗𒊏𒅀 (āššūrāyu)، stemming from the ancient term "Ashur," associated with both the ancient Assyrian deity and the name of Assyria itself. This term gradually shortened to "ܫܘܿܪ̈ܵܝܹܐ⁩ (šōrāyē)" and further to "ܣܘܿܪ̈ܵܝܹܐ⁩ (šōrāyē)". These changes occurred during the period of the adoption of Christianity, when the Assyrians were persecuted, and through the process of Hellenization, during which Greek Christian missionaries influenced the original name. The term "ܪ̈ܵܝܹܐ⁧ܐܵܬ݂ܘܿ⁩ (ātōrāyē)" derives from the Achaemenid name for Assyria and the Assyrians, rendering it also a non-original self-designation for the Assyrians.

Please, preserve the original name without arbitrary changes. This is important not only from a traditional standpoint but also for maintaining the uniqueness of this designation.

@Diklath: Hi Diklath! I am not questioning the above or the etymology of ܣܘܪܝܐ. But I do think that they (still) should be listed there as well. Shmayo (talk) 12:52, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
