My song, "Tools"

[edit]

You just stay around to keep the tools, you just stay around to keep the tools! You think that we're all fools, you just stay around to keep the tools! Making minute edits every year, you make minute edits every year! We can see it's very clear, you make minute edits every year! Users such as yourself who make a significantly low amount of edits just to keep your administrative tools sicken me and many others. Just give up the tools already!!! What are you holding on to them for anyways!! What a selfish thing to do!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.35.104.149 (talk) 01:39, 27 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Back in 2006 you put up a message on Category:Fair use stamp images saying "As the template mentions, stamp images in this category should not be used solely as a cheap way to illustrate articles. In addition to the problem that images are often altered for artistic reasons and thus may not be factually accurate representations of their subject, Wikipedia:Fair use criteria does not allow for it." That seems to be a bit stronger than is needed, for example Category:Fair use images of book covers doesn't say something like that, even though Template:Non-free book cover says much the same thing as Template:Non-free stamp, and a number of fair use stamps are used just as illustrations, for example File:Lewis & Clark stamp 2004.jpg in Lewis and Clark Expedition and File:Nguyen Van Troi.jpg in Nguyễn Văn Trỗi, probably more. Honestly I don't see any difference between a fair use image that happens to have scalloped edges, and a fair use image that happens to have pasteboard book cover backing or an oak painting frame; they each either meet our fair use criteria or they don't, stamps aren't special. I'd like to remove the special message, or at least change it so it specifies that all we need to do is meet NFCC, stamps aren't special. --GRuban (talk) 12:05, 15 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Heh, that message is from a different age. Back then, imagery was in much shorter supply - nowadays we have a multitude of free-licensed celebrity photos, but that wasn't always the case, and stamp images were sometimes used as an imagined workaround, and then we would have to have an argument about it every single time. But you're right that stamps aren't special that way, and it sounds like a good idea to make all the categories consistent. Stan (talk) 15:00, 15 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, I simplified the message, I hope that is correct. If you're interested what this was about, it's from a request on User_talk:GRuban#Alba_Roballo - and if you know anything about the copyright term of Uruguayan stamps specifically, it would be great if you could add it to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Stamps/Public_domain from where it is conspicuouosly absent. --GRuban (talk) 01:11, 17 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
BTW ... I just saw the sad anonymous message a few sections up in May. I, for one, am quite grateful you're still here, to discuss issues such as this one, and would like to thank you for sticking around. There is no minimum level of contribution required, we appreciate all the help anyone puts in. --GRuban (talk) 23:07, 17 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

Your redirect page to Dero A. Saunders

[edit]

The Saunders article stated he sometimes wrote under the name John P. Grier a Champion racehorse. I removed it as the reference given made no mention of "Grier" and I could find nothing to corroborate the claim. Although the horse in question existed, it belonged to Harry Payne Whitney who in fact named him after his stockbroker, the New York Stock Exchange member John P. Grier who might well warrant a Wikipedia article. [1]

Please advise as I was shortly going to do an article on the horse.

Thanks for your help. Stretchrunner II (talk) 17:02, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A curious situation. At the time I just copyedited, took the assertions at face value. My most charitable explanation is that some website author saw (presumed) quotes from the stockbroker displayed at forbes.com and decided they had to be the executive editor hiding his identity - which might actually be true, but we prefer to work with evidence. :-) Stan (talk) 12:32, 10 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

HI! First, thank you for your mail, I appreciate it. But on another note; I see that you are an administrator. However, from the AfDs, I got the impression that you were some newbie, who created some articles in the distant past but wasn't really versed in Wikipedia policies. You don't seem to know anything about notability, deletion policy, .... Do you think it is wise to remain an administrator when you are so out of the loop on the day-to-day working of Wikipedia. It seriously increases the chances of you using the admin tools in incorrect ways. Fram (talk) 08:23, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
