My Talk Page Archives

[edit]

After a few months of editing here at Wikipedia, I deleted a number of "newbie errors"-related posts so as to "clean up" the page, with my goal being conciseness and reducing "clutter". However, I do want to say thank you to the following Wikifriends who welcomed me, and were kind enough to spend their valuable time and effort giving me tips and guidance on how to do things easier and more "by the Wikibook", and/or who have went "above and behond the call" by peer reviewing my articles or helping me with requests and problems:

  • Doc James/Jmh649 (ask him, not me)
  • Axl
  • Jdfwolff
  • Immunize
  • Tryptofish
  • RexSS
  • Boing! said Zebedee
  • PDCook
  • Chzz
  • Circéus
  • Tyrol5
  • Ruhrfisch ><>°°
  • SPhilbrick
  • Kudpung
  • What Am I Doing
  • My Core Competency is Competency

I have created an Archive Page for the old post "overflow" - if you want to read these messages, they can be found here.

WOW! A NOTE FROM A REAL STUD!

[edit]

A few days ago I was on some doctor's Talk Page and noticed a pathology-related message that this doctor had posted to the Talk Page of a user called "MRWick". On a hunch, I texted "MRWick". Turns out I was correct - the guy was the LEGENDARY pathologist Dr. Mark R. Wick, who would undoubtedly be placed in my personal list of the "TOP 10 BADA$$E$ IN CANCER PATHOLOGY". Following here (below) is the (verbatim) reply I got from him:

Dear Cliff,

I appreciate your recognition, but I'm just a guy trying to do a job like anyone else! Please feel free to contact me regarding any Wikipedia projects to which you think I might contribute, or "just because"! ... (redacted his email address) ... Best, Mark W.

Your Combined Small Cell Lung Carcinoma Article

[edit]

As requested, I've had a look at Combined small cell lung carcinoma and made some minor copyedits, none of which were crucial. You've produced a fine article and I hope you'll continue to contribute to Wikipedia for a long time. Most of the detail edits were to place references immediately after punctuation – this is not compulsory, but it is better to maintain a consistent style. Now that you've got the hang of writing for Wikipedia, you should have a look at the linked guidelines I gave in my edit summaries; they will help you fine-tune your style to the conventions here.

Two jobs remain:

  1. Once you have named a reference, you can make subsequent cites to the same ref simply by using <ref name="xxx" />, without writing out them out in full - see WP:REFNAME;
  2. Best practice is to use a citation template, such as {{cite book}} or {{cite journal}}. This allows us to produce COinS metadata, which is of use for external users to collect bibliographic data from our articles. It also provides a fairly consistent format for citations (not that this is a problem with your cites).

I've replaced the first two references with citation templates as examples for you, and also replaced a few of the duplicate references with the short-form named reference, so that you can see how it works. Updating 'bald' refs to citation templates is a time-consuming job and not strictly necessary, so I wouldn't worry if you don't have time (although it is a good exercise in wikipedia referencing). The job of replacing duplicate named refs with the short-form needs to be done. If you can find a little time, I'd recommend having a go at it. I'll keep this page and the article page on my watchlist for some time, so I can help out if you run into problems. You can reply here if you want to, as I'll see that as well. --RexxS (talk) 03:30, 27 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Medical manual of style

[edit]

Thank you for your kind comments on my talk page, Cliff. I forgot to mention that we have a manual of style for medicine called WP:MOSMED. It's a lot to read, but if you are creating articles, the part entitled Sections is very useful as an guideline for organisation and naming of your article sections. Hope that helps. --RexxS (talk) 03:39, 27 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Useful templates

[edit]

Greetings and thank you for your contributions. I just wanted to draw your attention to a couple of tools that might help with referencing the articles you are writing. You can place these citation templates between the <ref> and </ref> tags and fill in the information. You can also use this wizard, which takes an url, ISBN or pubmed ID, and fills the template in for your. I also like to use Reftools. Happy editing! PDCook (talk) 18:50, 12 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Giant cell carcinoma of the lung, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://www.redorbit.com/news/health/1480009/pulmonary_sarcomatous_tumors. Your contributed article, Giant cell carcinoma of the lung

[edit]

Hello, I notice that you recently created a new page, Giant cell carcinoma of the lung. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as yourself. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page - Bronchioloalveolar carcinoma. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will to continue helping improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Bronchioloalveolar carcinoma - you might like to discuss new information at the article's talk page.

If you think that the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. Shashwat986 (talk) 17:31, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I know they're not the same, but you seem to have copied the whole Classification section from the page. The rest of the page consists of just two lines. If you have enough details to make a good article, I recommend you add a {{{hangon}}} tag and fast. All the best making another wonderful article. Shashwat986 (talk) 17:35, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • With all due respect, I wrote that classification section myself and have used it on several articles. In fact, I was the one that did that work on the bronchioloalveolar carcinoma page. As an aside, giant cell carcinoma and bronchioloalveolar carcinoma are related in no way, shape, or form - aside from the fact that they are lung carcinomas, and are part of the same lung carcinoma classification system. Are you sure the other page didnt copy it from ME? Thanks.

Many thanks for correcting grammar issues. A few notes on Wikipedia formatting. Request for assistance

[edit]

First welcome to Wikipedia. I’ve only glanced around, but it appears you are contributing considerably.

I spend a fair amount of time at the WP:FEED desk, where frankly, most of the request are in serious need of basic help. However, a recent request is in a very different category – it looks fine structurally, but needs the review of an expert.

The request is here, while the actual draft is User:ScienceRulz2012/Crizotinib

I’m always nervous about a technical article written by a single author, so at a minimum, I’d like someone else with relevant expertise to glance over it and make sure it is reasoanble unbiased.

You seem to be the best qualified. Is this something you can review? If not, can you suggest someone else?

(I note that one of the other reviewers has commented that future notability may be an issue. I don’t consider that a major problem in light of fairly substantial factual coverage – the future notability issue is more an issue when people are citing rumors about future fils or books. While this drug will be or not be approved in the future, I think there is sufficent coverage of the trail phase, although your thoughts would be welcome.SPhilbrickT 01:46, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there VIRUS, VASCO (217.129.65.5 IP) from Portugal here,

I really cannot defend myself any further, expect by saying this: i have an undiagnosed bipolar disorder, which makes it even harder to control myself in edit summaries. I know that most of the WP users are here to make useful contributions, but some are not.

Why do people continue to: 1 - engage in vandalism; 2 - remove pieces of content in articles without one word in summary (this is not figurative speech, i mean ZERO words in summary), very hard to play by the book, especially with my condition.

However, you (as well as another user/admin concerned) do what you think is best, i will try to engage in better behaviour from now on (have always, but it's been very difficult man). Keep up the good work, attentively - --Vasco Amaral (talk) 02:11, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Back from the dead Cliff...My suspension is over, i have returned, will try to amend my ways even harder this time.

I noticed, from your messages to the other people involved in my situation, User:Gfoley4 and User:Chzz, that you were greatly offended by some of the contents in my message to the former (the stuff in parenthesis). Why on earth? There, i was merely venting my frustration on being (rightfully) blocked, which did not allow for my fight against vandalism (can't do much blocked, can i?). I have had people come to my page and call me every name in the book, just for reporting their vandalic ways, one "chap" was on my case for almost one year, reverting my daily edits and so...I was in no way offensive to Foley.

That said (and i have also messaged Foley and Chzz with this note - and by the way, i believe you 100% when you say Chzz is a very nice person, but did not receive one word in feedback from him regarding this situation after i messaged him, unlike you and Foley), sorry for any incovenience and keep up the good work - --Vasco Amaral (talk) 03:27, 15 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Mr. Knickerbocker, I'm looking for help from a few random Wikipedians - and after our recent correspondence, you seemed appropriate!

The request itself is somewhat random...

There's a liaison project between Wikipedia and some universities (currently, USA, and re 'public policy' - it's a trial) - the students write an article as part of their uni course.

Two specific courses have only a few weeks left, and I'm trying to help them; what they need is, comments and feedback on their two articles - and some interaction with the Wikipedia community. Hence, getting random folks involved might really help!

The article Education policy in Brazil (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) was started by Elizabetsyatbu (talk · contribs),

The article California Proposition 19 (2010) (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) is, re. lorink (talk · contribs) abond112 (talk · contribs) Dross33 (talk · contribs)

If you could provide any comments, feedback, suggestions, or other interaction - to help with this - that'd be superb.

I hope you don't mind my asking. Any little comments to those users, and/or on the article talk pages, would be brilliant; thanks so much in anticipation.  Chzz  ►  06:08, 16 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for changing that comment.

Two more small things. One, internet etiquette disparages using ALL CAPS, since it is code for screaming. Civility rarely involve screaming, so in the interest of civil comments, regular caps is preferred. That doesn't mean you can't disagree emphatically, just not with as much height. - _

Two, Your background in lung cancer (I think that's the subject) is a great asset. And committing to bring an article up to top-class is a great goal. Just don't fall into WP:OWN territory. This is an exceedingly communal project. Most articles, even--if not especially--the best articles, wind up having had tens or hundreds of editors work on them. If you're bucking that trend, chances are it's going to be a frustrating road, or that you will be going against some suggestions that could be an asset as well. Thanks for your great interest and concern though--just keep a sense of how many people edit here and how many are trying to make good alterations to content (the vast majority).

Cheers! Ocaasi c 03:12, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Great editors shouldn't leave because one guy is a dick. (I didn't follow this debate, so that's no comment on Kwami at all). If you have done all you can here, then great. I'm glad you did it. If you have more to do, then ask Kwami to wait until you finish, or argue the merits of the issue, or concede his point, or don't think that it must matter and edit anyway. What can I say, don't mistake a benign growth for a malignant one. Just because you bump into it doesn't mean it's gonna kill you! Cheers! Ocaasi c 03:32, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I would also note that User:Georgewilliamherbert told Kwami to stop editing cancer, and Kwami agreed - then promptly broke his promise on very thin grounds (at best). I will be asking this same person to re-intervene once more.
Lastly, I would like to welcome you, Mr. Guerillero, to the discussion, late as you may be, because as I recall, you have contributed about nil to the issue so far. I'd also respectfully suggest that you take a thorough look at the archives in the various complaint boards to see how Kwami has positioned himself throughout these events, and those similar to this one, over the past 2 or more years.
I hope this can be settled amicably and in short order this time. I will do all I can to see that it is. However, just FYI, if this hyphenation issue on the "-cell articles" is not settled this time, I intend to put together a complete and thorough report of all incidents of what I consider to be inappropriate conduct in the past, including the use of administrators tools and everything, and will not rest until either myself or the problems are ended. Now, not to toot my own horn, but I am an unquestioned expert in putting together investigative reports, and have done so for 20 years. I dont want any more trouble, but I will guarantee that if more trouble is forced upon me, there will be a lot that comes out into the open that noone, including me, wants.
Thank you for the opportunity to respond. Let me know what you want to do ... lets either settle this now, or lets get started with the "trial", because its not going to take me long to gather a lot of very problematic behaviors on the part of certain individuals that they will not be able to rebut very effectively. Just do a quick complaint archive search and you will see what I mean, and let me know what you think. And I apologize for any mistakes, past and present, that I've made.

I don't know exactly what she told you but she told me to bring up the subjects I'm interested in. She said you were a kindred spirit when it comes to science... I know I'm only 18 but these are the subjects I have been delving into...

      • GLAD TO HEAR FROM YOU, see your Talk Page ...

1. Quantum physics and Time theory

    • Awesome - hopefully we can yak about this a LOT, but I will just mention the BEST place for papers in this area, if you don't know about it already => http://arxiv.org

2. DNA and gene therapy to cure tumors caused from fragmented strands of DNA

    • Cancer is my area. If you want, we can do some papers to be turned into publications together. I've got a few ideas (see the giant cell carcinoma section on my User Page, for example) that I think could end up in BIG journals.

3. I have invented a perpetual energy vehicle that requires no input

    • Dying to see your theories, because even goofs (no offense intended - LOL) can do wonders for understanding, but the 1st/2nd Laws of Thermodynamics says "this is impossible". 1st Law = "You Can't Win", 2nd Law = "You Can't Even Break Even"

4. Singularity Research and I disproved M Theory

    • Your math skills must DRAMATICALLY exceed mine then - I had Calc I, II, III and Differential Equations in college, that's it ... and that was 30 years ago! I will give you two pieces of advice - physics concepts are easy, its the math in physics thats hard. Math training is CRITICAL. If you have skills commensurate with M-theory-related work, you got MY butt kicked severely. I've studied statistics a lot the last 5 years, you need to take 20 minutes to master that. LOL!

5. I'm a writer and have been for years... I have an editor, staff, the whole nine yards

    • THIS factoid has PROFOUND implications IF you have any desire to work with me, because I hate to write manuscripts. HOWEVER, I can crank out "Top 5%" cancer research like crazy.
    • OFFER: Work with me on lung cancer - I do the idea, statistics, and conclusions, and show you what I'm doing in order to bring you up to the "Top 5%" level of knowledge on the subject. That "education" should take approximately 12 hours ... say 4 days at 3 hrs per. You do (most) of the writing and get the manuscripts to draft form, I do final copy editing and tweaking, we work together to submit. We could get at least one major publication per month.

6. Philosophy of existence and the subjective nature of the quantum universe

7. I'm a painter as well but that isn't exactly the most relevant thing... :)

    • I have ZERO taste, and could not draw a "stick man" with a ruler if my life depended on it. My talent = BOTTOM 5%

My grandma told me to talk to you because around southern Illinois I don't exactly know of too many people that are like me and study these things as hobbies... Get back to me whenever you can and hopefully I can have someone to do research and science theory with...

    • I WOULD ABSOLUTELY LOVE TO TALK TO YOU ANYTIME, just make sure you have LOTS of time, because I love the stuff, and like you, have no one to talk to because I am SO FAR BEYOND just about anyone I've ever worked with.

Thanks so much! -Tyler Fauke and Janet Fauke — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thedisassembler (talkcontribs) 17:07, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    • I created/posted on your Talk Page, and also within yout text above ...
    • My office number is 618-993-8000. Call me as soon as you see this message on one of the three numbers I've left. TTYL bro.

Adopt-a-Typo

[edit]

Hello! You have received this message because it is believed that you might be interested in adopting a typo for your very own.

What is adopt-a-typo?

[edit]

Adopt-a-typo is an effort to harness a movement that already exists in Wikipedia. Individual users already pick typos that particularly irritate them, and search for them in the Wikipedia articles. Adopt-a-typo is intended to do three things:

  • Add social credit to this practice, so that users feel enticed to join and adopt.
  • Catalog the growth of the adopt a typo movement, so that there is a list of ALL adopted typos.
  • Enable those who want to adopt a typo to do so quickly and easily.

Why do you want to start this new group, instead of joining one of these existing groups?

[edit]

I, and probably you, have joined several groups that pursue the same goal through different means, but we at Adopt-a-Typo believe this proposal harnesses the unique power that Wikipedia has with its mass conglomerate of editors.

Invitation from the Guild of Copy Editors

The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their September 2011 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy editing backlog. The drive will begin on September 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on September 30 at 23:59 (UTC). We will be tracking the number of 2010 articles in the backlog, as we want to copy edit as many of those as possible. Please consider copy editing an article that was tagged in 2010. Barnstars will be given to anyone who edits more than 4,000 words, with special awards for the top 5 in the categories "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". See you at the drive! – Your drive coordinators: Diannaa, Chaosdruid, The Utahraptor, Slon02, and SMasters.
