- ^ 1653 is the officially recognized date.[۳] پتر استویوسانت convinced the پارلمان هلند to charter the city of نیو آمستردام in 1653.[۴] The English envoy, Richard Nicolls, renamed the city "New York" two days after capturing it in 1664.[۵] Provincial governor Thomas Dongan rechartered the city under the auspices of the جیمز دوم انگلستان in 1683،[۶] though the charter was not published until 1686.[۷] Finally, New York was reincorporated to include all five of its present boroughs in 1898.

The expedition against New Amsterdam had been organized with the Duke of York, afterward King James II. , as its special patron, and the city was rechristened in his honor.
