Area code 978 is a telephone area code in the state of Massachusetts, United States. It was created on September 1, 1997, when it was split from area code 508. It covers the northeastern part of Massachusetts, including cities and towns such as Lowell, Lawrence, Fitchburg, Haverhill, and Leominster. It was overlaid by 351 in 2001.
