描述The Big Fella and The Fighting 2nd (6340864262).jpg | 2 of 13 armoured cars given by the British government to the National Army during the Irish Civil War. They were built on a Rolls-Royce chassis, and were armed with a .303 Vickers machine gun. The Fighting 2nd still shows 1043 CK, its British registration. Like the rest of these cars, it was later given an ARR (Armoured Rolls-Royce) no. by the National Army, in this case ARR3, while The Big Fella was designated ARR8. Read down through the comments below for great information on armoured cars from guliolopez and vintary... Thanks to Rekt-PNK for identifying General Frank Thornton at the right of the front row. He is coming back to us with more information, but his contribution is useful in dating this photo. General (or Commandant) Frank Thornton was very badly wounded in an ambush in Kilkenny on 22 August 1922, so the photo must have been taken before August. If we add this to vintary's belief (though I'll have to check) that this photo appeared in the Cork Examiner on 10 July 1922, then we should be able to date this photo very accurately... Date: 1922 NLI Ref.: HOG65 |
