The Chocolatería San Ginés is a café at Pasadizo de San Ginés, 5, in central Madrid, in a passageway close to San Ginés church, west of the Puerta del Sol.[1] It has served principally chocolate con churros (hot chocolate and churros) since 1894. Coffee and cakes are also available.
The interior is decorated with mirrors and green wood panels, with green velvet seats and marble tables. The hot chocolate is served in Spanish style - thick, dark and strong. The churros are cut to length by the staff and served hot and freshly cooked, ready for dunking.[citation needed]
International branches
[edit]There are currently branches in Marbella, Spain;[2] in Cais do Sodré in Lisbon, Portugal;[3] and in Austin, Texas and Miami Beach, Florida, in the United States,[4] and in the Mercado de los Carruajes in Buenos Aires, Argentina.[5]
There were 3 locations in Mexico City on Parque España in Colonia Condesa, the Historic Center of Mexico City and in Lomas de Chapultepec.[6] However these are closed as of 2025.[7][8]
In 2010, a San Ginés's branch was opened in Shibuya, Tokyo (Japan).[1] It closed one year later, in 2011.[citation needed]
In popular culture
[edit]This cafe has been mentioned in multiple literary works, including Los Episodios OkNacionales by Benito Pérez Galdós and Luces de Bohemia by Valle Inclán.[1]
